You should never do wheelies. They are dangerous to you and the general public. Why cant you just keep two wheels on the ground and enjoy the scenery like an upstanding member of society? :D

By the way, my best wheelies are probably 1/4 of a mile long. I should practice more. Straight roads are hard to come by where I ride.

How do you get the bike to stay up that long (1/2 mile), I can only get it up in second at 50 mph to about 85 mph then it just falls down.

My brother asked me the very same question. You have to turn youreself into the counterbalance. That means lean back against the bike using minimal power to hold it up. You gotta be careful not to get too upright or youll become unstable. I used to think that the more torward the 12'oclock position the better to hold it up, this is untrue and unsafe cause you can get the backtire wobble and itll slam you on the pavement. About 45 degree is the best place but it depends on youre weight and the balance point of the bike youre riding. You just have to work with it. Also if youre coming down at 80 then quick shift into third. I can tell you that mine holds 2nd until 110mph and third @125mph. Its just a feel and no one can tell you that you just have to work with it. The best advise I can give is, 1. Keep the front tire straight, if you come down at that speed with it cocked youll get a tank slapper that you may not be able to recover from. 2. Only do em in the straights, on good assphault with minimal bumps in the road. 3. keep it smooth, if its rough drop it and try again. Dont try to ride out a real rough wheelie, If and when it stays there," smooth" and youre not having to alter the throttle too much to keep it up then ride on! As you gain more speed just add more throttle to hold it up, if you run into the limiter then quick shift! Hope this helps, above all try to keep it safe and smooth just like if youre slaming into a 35mph curve at 70. Same difference, Let me know if any of this helps

learning balance point is best done in second unless you re-gear your bike 2002red954,
If you try to learn distance from 1st gear you may freak and flip.
Truck's giving it to ya though, just be real smooth with the throttle and don't be skeeered.hehehe

I found it best learned bytwitching the throttle or bobbing it if you will very slightly and taking it real slow on building up the height.

Longest was from 1st through 3rd ( wanted to go into 4th but the road ran out) and let it down at over 115mph... what'd that be around :?: 3/4 of a mile to a mile???

I'm not into holding bp for too long because I like to feel the power keeping the bike up.:D

fukinnuts
06-08-2004, 03:07 PM
I started with first gear. The throttle position is key with first because you can easily loop it. Also you come down quick and hard. I stiffined up the front suspension which helped alot. Before I changed the gears, I could get almost a 1/4 mile in first. Now with the new gearing, first gear is useless for long wheelies, so second gear is the shit.

Is it best to sit down or stand up? Also would you use the clutch when shifting in the air?

I find myself using the throttle to keep the bike up and not much balance, I think I'll have to practice more. Thanks for the info. :D

Is it best to sit down or stand up? Also would you use the clutch when shifting in the air?

whatever you feel most comfortable with. I would rarely do my stand-ups starting off but would drop it down into 1st at 50mph and pop it up, then at the exact same time of twitching the wrist just a Tad I flick it into second without the clutch and keep on power wheelieing as you say you enjoy. :D
if you are new at twitch shifting (or speed shifting or power shifting,,, whatever they call it around by you) then practice while Not in a wheelie.
The most safe way to learn is to apply a small amount of pressure from under the shifter so as to have the bike stil in gear and when you let off the throttle it will smoothly click into the next gear and then it's back on the throttle again.

don't do this practice from 1st to second if you are learning there is a larger delay window and the chance of grinding out second is uncool.
:D

The one thing that ive found is that the balance point is much lower when youre leaning back on it. If youre not leaning back you have to have the nose of the bike much higher and to me it seems less safe. Leaning back is the key

adrenalinjunkee
06-10-2004, 07:12 AM
My longest is about 1 to 1 1/4 miles. If you work @ it, you can throttle her up in fourth and it's much less twitchy. You also have the air pressure to help it stay up. I can yank it up @ around 125 on my speedo... which is about 130 135 on my friends bikes speedo. I did a gear change. Front sprocket up one tooth, rear sprocket down 2, for more top end. That's why my speedo is so far off.

Yes.

I went down 1 up front and up 3 in the rear. It's pretty dramatic at first, but after a while I got used to it and like it alot. I've lost top end but I can still keep up. It's quick off the line, second gear is like first and it comes up much easier in the higher gears. It's not for everyone, but there's all types of configurations you can mess around with.

2K whats bad about this particular wheelie is it is in a zone that is patrolled by highway, city and county, and there is three different speed changes in it. But it was my last day on the bike and I figured what the heck.

as long as there's no salt on the rode to slip me up I rail the shit out of it. In snow pants even. cold weather is cool because the bike runs better and powerslides are much much more useable on the country style backtop. With the engine running crisper I was able to keep the bike up at power point (not balance point) longer and easily often have third gear wheelies seem like 2nd gear ones. suspensions a little stiffer and the bumps are more sharp from the harder tires and the contractions in the road so skipping occurs for me like at times your on a pogo stick unicycle with some of the more safe high speed back roads I used to wheelie on with the 954. It did nice too. longest I think for me was maybe a mile, sit down. It wasn't till a few months before it went bye bye that I learned stand ups. then I coulda figured it out and went went went...

you distance isnt want caused it nor did your dampler help you out. if you got a 1kRR it didnt help you out. the HESD dont work like others but glad to see you pulled thru it. next tiem you got distance just make sure you got yoru bars straight. if the littlest bit of being off youll have that same issue occur. 1mile or 5 miles dropping it at 70mph will be the same result. just becarefull with your landing and you wont get a tank slapper

It was more likely due to the crowning on the tire from the track day. I get that with my tires alot. I'm thinking that may be the cause of my wheelie wobbles at higher speeds too. When you set her down, lean back and tweak the throttle a little to set er down lightly, that helps too. Now you get an idea how scary it is setting em down @ 140+! Eeeee :!:

You have to know an officer that is willing to give you one. It's their butt that's on the line if you get it pulled for something stupid. It was so windy I was hanging off of the left side of the bike (and apparently had the bars turned too) to keep it straight. I finally came into traffic and set it down. The motherfucker started slappin and I thought I was going to bite some asphalt. It tank slapped so hard, the Scotts steering damper has a leak now. It just bubbles out of the top pin. The point is... to pay attention to where the front wheel is pointed, and the conditions.

Get the bike to it's balance point. if you do that, you can actually slow the bike while in a wheelie. You can do it by getting it more upright, but more dangerous, so I'll reccomend leaning back more to counterbalance the bike. This keeps the front wheel lower and more stable.

truck is gettin pretty good at em.. especially at the gap.. lol tryin to stand it up in the straights there for like 100 ft or so... then drop into another curve

i can pop it up in 1st and 2nd but when i try to shift gears it just flops down... hard.... im scared im gonna get a slapper one time trying to shift gears so i just balance it up and then bring her down... longest i have done is maybe 1/4-1/3 mile or so.... dropping them in 2nd gear at about 100-110

you try making the shift without the clutch?

The trick is to get the bike to the balance point, go just past that, lightly roll off the throttle and make the shift without the clutch. Oh yeah, get right back on the throttle once it's in the next gear. (Since you're going to be getting off the gas because you're going past the balance point anyway, it makes it extremely easy to keep the bike pointed skyward.)

thats a 10-4... no clutch when im shifting from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to third... i can get it up and ride it all the way out... i may need to counterbalance the bike out a lil bit and lean back more....

One sunny afternoon, traveling from Riverside to LA...in the HOV lane...at about 80mph, doing a stand up wheelie......NOT ME, but someone else...

This cat was in t-shirt, shorts, and tennis shoes...in the freaking HOV lane doing a stand up. I saw another biker throw a deuce sign up and I was like...huh...til i looked in my mirror and saw him riding one. he was about 100m behind me, and just rode it thru. the funny thing was, he rode this wheelie about 2.5 to 3 miles...CHANGING LANES at the same time...i was behind him...well, not completely, but to see how long he was gonna hold it...
