: 954 dependabilty?
matt954 06-10-2004, 05:04 PM How many miles do people have on their 954s or 929s? how long do these bikes run for before people have problems with them or need major rebuilds? I tell people they run great for at least forty thousand miles before any problems is this a good guess or am i way off?
gntbldr 06-10-2004, 06:35 PM I've heard of getting well over 50k on a properly maintained hard ridden 954...
Truck 06-10-2004, 08:27 PM I understand that the pick up tube for the oil is in the back of the pan so wheelies shouldnt hurt the motor :?: Ive seen at least a dozen other bikes that were being rebuilt at around 25k :?
snigg 06-10-2004, 09:42 PM 14k on mine and not a single problem. when did you guys get your valves adjusted? i heard 12k but i dont hear any knocking or anything so...
cbrjimmy1KRR 06-10-2004, 11:23 PM i will have 24,000 on mine by the end of this weekend (going back to the oklahoma hills :D ) not one single problem. the only things i have done has been: keeping the oil changed, spark plugs (once at 19,000 miles) and freakin tires.
CBR-RR-XX-CESS 06-11-2004, 12:56 PM A buddy of mine has over 60k on his 929 that he uses as a track bike and 45k on his 954 that is his street bike. Had to replace the cpu on one of them which honda covered .
matt954 06-11-2004, 01:04 PM Thats some impressive milage on those bikes, but how much money has been laid down for repairs?

Other than a cpu on one just basic stuff- oil, filters lots of tires breke pads, spockets and chains, fork seals and some light bulbs. Still running the stock shock on the 954
matt954 06-12-2004, 08:52 AM wow, thats great thanks for all the great input.
tooks954 06-14-2004, 11:09 AM 11k on mine and she is still running strong as ever.
CBR-RR-XX-CESS 06-14-2004, 01:58 PM i will have 24,000 on mine by the end of this weekend (going back to the oklahoma hills :D ) not one single problem. the only things i have done has been: keeping the oil changed, spark plugs (once at 19,000 miles) and freakin tires.
Did you notice a change after installing new plugs? Have 17k on mine with new plugs in the garage.
cbrjimmy1KRR 06-14-2004, 04:17 PM I noticed mine idled a little smoother after the plug change.....other than that, i couldn't notice any real difference :?
AzRael 06-14-2004, 10:56 PM I needed a new transmission after the first MONTH. It was brand new and those BASTARDS at Honda wouldn't cover it under warranty. I had to shell out $1,400.00 to get it fixed because Honda doesn't give a shit about you after you buy one of there bikes. I haven't had a problem with the bike since and I have 27K on it now.
Anonymous 06-15-2004, 12:12 AM Almost 11k and nothing more than fork seals, brake pads, plugs and oil changes......
adrenalinjunkee 06-16-2004, 01:38 AM I have 24k on the clock and I only went through a water pump & a main wiring harness. (Both of which, Honda covered on the extended warranty.
I bought my bike because I saw a write up in (I think it was...) Sport rider. They did a long term test on a 900 rr. The last I recall, it was around 200 k on the clock, only one clutch... thats it!
nutty954rr 06-17-2004, 08:38 AM i got 25k on mine and have only done tires and oil changes and an air filter getting the valves done in two weeks
CBR-RR-XX-CESS 06-17-2004, 02:37 PM i got 25k on mine and have only done tires and oil changes and an air filter getting the valves done in two weeks
Don't waste your money on a valve adjustment,I have not heard of a single 954 needing adjustment before 4o K . Now I'm taiking street use not track.
FixXxRR 06-19-2004, 12:31 AM in most cases the shim underbucket valve train will not make noise when there is wear, the valve will tighten as the face wears, not loosen. they sound loose in the beginning so it has room for wear. prevenative maintinace is always a good thing. prolly one of the most important would be the air filter, its installation and seal. theres no need to suck dirt. weve seen goldwings with 300k+ miles roll thru the shop sounding great. the honda name wont dissapoint. on the other hand, it doesnt matter what it is, squirels can destroy anything.
nutty954rr 06-21-2004, 08:20 AM im a racer and ride my bike hard so im doing the valves and cam chain and in another 5k im going to do a bernet clutch.
fastbikesrule 07-02-2004, 09:24 AM I'm got a whole 2100 miles on my bike. I've had it since the end of March. So far it's only needed tires and oil/filter.
AzRael 07-10-2004, 08:45 PM I had my valves adjusted at 10k and again at 22k. They were too tight both times. I just rode it from Oklahoma to Vegas and up into Colorado and now I have 33k on it and I am thinking about getting it looked at again. Colorado has some awesome roads btw. The altitude will castrate your bike though.

gntbldr 08-13-2004, 01:59 AM welcome.
no worries bro. Just ride it like you own it and it'll be alright.
It's a bike that wants to be riden hard right. and right from the start and after 8k miles both mine were stronger then than when new.
I had both the ticking on each of them bikes and the tranny was a little rough on the second one but I shifted a little faster and it was fine... just a tighter tranny.
You should just enjoy the hell out of your bike and ride it like it's your ticket to freedom. :D just remember that it has to get you there so no beating on it, eh.
hahaha...
trying to ease you up on them worries. :)
