What's the best way to torque the steering stem nut without bending/breaking the soft aluminum pin? Also, what bolts should I use the blue loctite on?

TIA

the blue loctite goes on the two bolts to the gas tank and also the two damper bolts (I didn't use any locktite and with proper torquing ,maybe a lil more, I had no issues)

to not bend the pin all I had available was a big ass flathead screwdriver that I wrapped up with a rag and with the bars to the left the ohlins' arm was to the right and I was able to wedge the screwdiver between the arm and the frame and then tighted the stem nut with my right hand while I held proper backpressure on the arm with the screwdriver with my left hand. It's a real bitch to do by yourself.
You may be able to find a pipe to slip over the cloth wrapped ohlins arm to use that in place of the screwdriver method since that's what I thought of after I had already gotten it done.
pay danged close attention to the pin when tightening the stem nut.
if broken, the pin can be tapped out with a punch and a hammer and another from a hardware store or something can be used in it's place.

go slow and steady. you'll be ok.

Thanks for the quick reply!!

I should have waited before I went into the garage!! Well I torqued the steering stem nut and sure enough I bent the damn pin. When I have everything in place and tightened the whole damper moves up and down (front to back) any ideas? Maybe the bracket is no longer dead center?

does the bracket move? If not just loosen and retighten all the mounting bolts(allen head), when you ride the first few times take a allen wrench with you, my would vibrate loose, finally got it to stay tight then it never came loose. weeeeeee

Just the bracket assy moves up and down. I have the bolt going into the sleeve then the metal washer and finally the teflon spacer. Should I loosen the steering stem nut and straighten the pin?

No, I torqued it to 76ftlbs. But the pin is bent, maybe off centre a bit.

if you have full range of motion both ways from steering lock to steering lock and the strut doesn't suck into the damper then all is good.! the main bracket can be a little off as wheelie said but didn't say. ;) ;)

Well? weeeee

Well the damper is on the bike!! I was told that the up and down movement is normal. Should the piston length be the same on both sides when the steering is dead center?

Thanks for all your help.

no the up and down movement is not normal, try using the metal washer only not the nylon. weeeee

Where the two allan keys hold the damper in the bracket, you can lift that up and down!!

are you using the nut that came with the bracket?Use the aluminium nut(not sure if its different that the stocker), I didnt use the washer there either. so your saying the bracket with the pin is loose. weeeee

No, the top bracket moves up and down, the one that holds the damper from moving side to side.

loosen the allen bolt, move the bracket slightly up and down when tightening the bolt. weeeeee

Already tried that!! So there should be no up and down motion if you lift the damper from the back?

Wheelie
06-23-2004, 08:13 PM
it shouldnt have any movement, make sure you have a flat washer there(on the top side of the nut). weeee

sorry, I meant make sure the washer is on the top side of the damper, under the allen BOLT. weeeee

I had a lot of slack on mine after I properly installed it per the instructions.... It wore out the nylon washer in no time.
see if you can get some teflon/nylon washers from the hardware store that will lessen the slack but entirely eliminate it. it needs Some room but not as much as ohlins' has it to be.

I will be calling Ohlins support today to talk about what I think is a poor design.

This is normal, the Ohlins is made with a allignment bearing in both mounting holes, if it was supposed to be solid (no movement) they would have just put a hole there.
