Last night I was out riding and I shifted from first to second. In second gear I open it up, bam, I'm in neutral. I thought I lost my chain. So I pull over. No, the chain is still there. So I checked the clutch out, seems good. I then thought well, lets try it again. I shift from first into second, open it up, bam neutral again. Now I'm pissed  . I don't even have 9k miles on this bike. I called up my dealer, they can't touch it, too busy. Looks like my riding season could be over :x . I have to try some other dealers.

I think I'm going to sell the 954 after the repairs are done. We'll have to see what happens.

Yeah it's under warranty. All the dealers are giving me the same, 'can't touch it till winter' bullshit' :disbelief: . I can't wait that long. So much for the waste of $ extended warranty :x . I'll fix it and sell it. I've been thinking of selling, I guess I got my answer.

Mine did the same thing after one month and 5K miles. Warranty isnt going to cover it. They are going tell you that you abused your bike and you are going to have to eat the 1,400. its going to take to get it fixed. I did

Yeah, once I figured out what was wrong, I knew warranty wouldn't cover it. They look for any reason not to pay. I changed the gearing, which could also be blamed. All in all, it sucks :slamhead:

I had the same problem last week on my 2002 954. The fourth gear is always slipping off, quite dangerous when it happen in the corners :x I went to an Honda dealer who said that it could be either the gear fork or the desmo drum.....holy shit, the warranty expired 60 days ago and Honda told me that they will not cover for this. The engine need to be opened and I've been asked for ~1000 Euro's to get it fixed   The bike has only 27000 Km on the clock. I've heard that this problem may "easily" happen on both 929 and 954.....time to go for a 1000RR maybe :D

Anybody else had this problem? It seems that it's not uncommon. It must be an engineering defect. I've beat other bikes much harder than the 954. All I know is I need a new bike quick. I just picked up an '87' CR 125 with a new motor and pipe for cheap because I need something to ride in the meantime. :depressed:

sounds like shift forks, although I always herd them referred to as shift Dogs.

Call Honda up directly and ask WTF good is a warranty if you cannot get into a dealer to use it. Mentions some BS like by the time I can get it into the shop the warranty will be expired- you call this customer Sat? and why did I pay for a warranty that can't be used...this is my last honda product ever.. :blah:

Call around for non dealers to get it repaired if you can't wait that long.

chances are it won't be covered, it is true that they look for ways not to cover a repair.
If not get a haynes/helms (your favorite manual here) and crack the tranny... do it yourself.

I've had my 954 slip out of 2nd before. It's not really a problem, but it does happen time to time under hard acceleration. I really hate the gearbox on these things. The first time I rode one, I thaught it was broken. Down from neutral, CLICK, KA-THUNK! First to second isn't very pleasant either. If I ever have the trans out of my bike, I'm definitely modifying the detent star to make it harder to hit neutral.
The shift forks aren't hard to replace. The parts aren't really expensive, either. It just takes LOTS of time. That's why the dealers want big $$$ to do it. You have to drop the engine and take apart the whole bottom end.

Yeah, I adjusted the shifter and it seemed to of helped. I figured on riding the bike untill the end of the season, then fixing the tranny, then I was going to sell it.
I'm not quite sure if the shifter adjustment fixed the problem because I took it a little easier in second and I didn't get the chance to really test it because it got stolen :x
So now I'm bikeless waiting to see what happens with the ins co. I'm sure something was wrong with the tranny though and I've heard others having the same problem.
