left side lower fairing - remove
loosen stator cover bolts- tap cover w/ rubber mallet to loosen
wrap stator cover with towel to prevent scratching - do not let hang from wires!
use impact tool w/ proper bit to loosen/ remove stator from cover
clean thoroughly and use Yamabond for re-assembly
use new gasket if old one was damaged, broken
replace fairing
fill with a quality engine oil
warm engine to operating temp
BEAT THE SHIT OUT Ol' 54!!! :D

new gasket.... it's like 10$

And don't over tighten the bolts! I snapped one when I replaced mine.

Then I dropped the bike a week later...LOL

I've replaced mine twice (don't laugh). It's pretty easy. When you are putting the cover back on, a) make sure your fingers aren't in between the cover and engine because the magnetic pull of the stator will quickly pull it on. and b) make sure the cover is going on straight.

Thats funny I pinched the shit out of my finger to. That lil job was a pain in the ass because I couldnt get it to seat straight.

I just replaced my stator cover this week. Here is my wisdom.

Go to Home depot...buy a 4' length of 3/16 rod. Cut into 4" lengths.
Place them in bolt holes. Use them as guides. This worked awesome for me, no problem with lining things up.

Next word of advice...DO NOT USE LOCK TITE ON FAIRING BOLTS!!!

I am still trying to get mine out.

Good luck.

Remember that Loc Tite comes in many forms for different applications. Be sure to use the temporary form on bolts that will have to be removed frequently. This is usually the blue type.
