: engine replacement
peejay211 07-05-2004, 05:19 AM a mechanic I know told me, that doing wheelies on the 954's or any other Honda will cuase the engine to go out. He told that because the wheel is up in the air and the motorcycle being at a slant that the oil goes to the back of the engine which causing the rings go bad, or something to that effect. He also told me that Honda knows about this problem and if happens, that Honda will not fix the bike under the warranty, becuase its considered abuse. I'm trying found out if this is true or if anyone else has heard this or experienced this. so I know if I should stop doing wheels before I have to buy a new engine. :?
Anonymous 07-05-2004, 10:06 AM Hona is the number one choice for stunters however I have heard the same thing but never whitnessed it.... Motors are only 1k anyway so I would do whatever you want with it.......
Truck 07-05-2004, 11:03 AM All the mechs that I know have told me that the oil pick up tube in the 954 is in the back of the motor and that it is the only bike done this way and that wheelies wont hurt this motor. I dont know for sure but three mechs here told me the same thing. I know that ive seen about seven gixxers at around 24,000 miles that wiped out and the guys that owned them were wheelie kings. My buddy ron that works at a dealer said that he hasnt even broke into the motor of a 954 yet. He has however done a lot of the recals on the 54.
My last wheelie was right at a mile and I ride a lot of them. I have 6000 miles on the bike right now and seems to run better with age.
Oh and by the way welcome to the board. :)
Wheelie 07-05-2004, 11:26 AM yep, what the trucker said, the 900rr were notorious for burning the #3 main bearing after very long and numerous wheelies, Honda warranteed many of those, then they got smart. weeeeeeee
Truck 07-05-2004, 02:23 PM So you guys are saying that the 954 is or isnt prone to spin a bearing from wheelies. I understood that this was one of the motors that really was made for riding wheelies. :?
Wheelie 07-05-2004, 04:33 PM 954 motor is oiling when doing wheelies! Go wheelie. weeeeeeeeeeeee
Truck 07-05-2004, 04:55 PM Thats what I thought. What about youre gixxie there wheelie, is the oil pick up tube in the front or the rear of the motor. All the mechs that i know say that its in the front and that its not good to do prolonged wheelies. However I ride with a guy name Butch that use to race moto gp back in the early 80's and he tells me that they all get oil on a wheelie and that all the mechs that ive talked too are wrong. The only reason that I give what Butch says stock is that the guy can perform miracles with motorcycles. He is an ace on being able to take a peice of crap and making it fast. What do you think :?
Wheelie 07-05-2004, 05:15 PM uhdoeno. I just wheelie. Also I use synthetic earl. weee
Truck 07-05-2004, 05:30 PM Obey kaybe
Anonymous 07-05-2004, 05:48 PM I have looked at the drawings and the pickup is in the rear. I have also seen a couple of guys that have done some custome oil hose routing to take care of the #3.... I will ask around to see if I can find some pics or exact details about the how to's of this mod.
Truck 07-05-2004, 07:25 PM I dont understand how if the pickup tube is in the back of the motor and is sucking up oil how the #3 is getting starved. I just looked at the service manual and all the bearings have an oil jet to shoot adiquate oil to it. But what do I know, I need to be ejumakated :D
Anonymous 07-05-2004, 08:22 PM I dont know the answer either but stuntlife.com woulod be a good source for that info......
Anonymous 07-05-2004, 08:33 PM I can't say about ever 954 but I don't think I have ever went a day riding without riding a few wheelies. and I have had no problems..
Knocking on wood right now..knock knock :D
Wheelie 07-05-2004, 10:49 PM The 900rr's were burning the #3. weeee
adrenalinjunkee 07-06-2004, 01:58 PM I used to work on the 900rr's They had issues with the # 3 bearings, (like wheelie said), The reason for the # 3 bearing crapping out is the oil goes to the # 3 journal first. Therefore, you run out of oil to that journal first. They rearranged the pickup location and the pickup itself to scavenge more oil during heavy accelleration (which also helps with wheelies)
So, the point is... rip the wheelies and have fun! 8)
Anonymous 07-06-2004, 06:23 PM Thats good stuff......

Just so that i understand, the 954 isnt gonna starv for oil on a wheelie, right :!: Just making sure. You guys are talking about the old 929's starving not the 54's. Is this correct. :?
Wheelie 07-06-2004, 08:11 PM Were talking about the CBR900rr CBR900rr CBR900rr, NO ISSUE WITH THE 954!!!!! Get it? weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Truck 07-06-2004, 08:15 PM Well if you look at the identification sticker on the frame it clearly says 900rr on the 954 indicating the cc's of the bike. Thats why im making sure, sure, sure, K gixie lover
Wheelie 07-06-2004, 08:29 PM 900? you got ripped off. LOL. weeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Truck 07-06-2004, 09:07 PM Well then all us boys on the 954 did cause they all say that on the ID sticker. But at least well be rolling on and on and on after youve traded in that worn out gixxie for something else :D
