My girlfriend is interested in becoming a motorcycle mechanic and was wondering which ones are most honored by most manufacturers for certification and what not.

you know like how auto mechanics can be ,what is it???, ASI certified?

anyone know of anyone that has gone through any of the schools out there and any input on any of them would be appreciated.

prolly the most popular and credited school is MMI, Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. Theres one in florida and one in arizona. I looked into it and its fawkin pricey as hell. they told me buying the tool alone would run me over 15 grand, plus the scool is around 20 i guess. This is out dated info and its not 100% concrete, so i'd check it out yourself before you take my word for it. :D

Cool shit though...she can be the next annandale racing mechanic :)

I know three mechs that went to school and one of them went to MMI. None of them make more than 20,000 a year. If its not about the money then go for it. If shes trying to make money then I wouldnt suggest this as a carrer. Please note that this is here in my erea and they may make a lot more i other ereas.

there are some guys around here that went to MMI and work for local shops, but where they make their money is doing stuff on the side. i agree, a person won't get rich working for shops, but it is great for experience.(to say " i did this, i did that and i worked here") my buddy is doing this in hopes that he can start his own shop. it's been what he has wanted for a long time. he knows he might not get rich, but he isn't happy unless his head is stuck up in an engine :D

Tools will crush you.... they are hella expensive.

My friend is an auto mechanic and he ahs like 50G's in tools.

He has that huge red tool box thatlocks. He just quit his job and got a new one and paid $200 to flatbed that box to his new job.

Granted a car has more parts then a bike, but good tools will realy set you back.

A good friend of mine is an MMI grad and my personal Mechanic. Nobody touches my bike but him.

He said that MMI set him up with a place to live in AZ while he was taking the school and it was like 10Gs. Also MMI has a Yoshimura Certified program.

People getting jobs is all up to the individual. But the MMI program is the best there is.

thanks for the replies gentlemen.

ultimate goal.... to be the shop people take their waranty work to instead of the stealer.
so all manufacturers need to recognize and support whatever certification she would recieve. I'll own the shop and it won't be just a repair shop either and it won't be a dealer.

any further info is Greatly appreciated. :)

thanks.

latest I've heard is that MMI is $22k
I haven't gotten around to stoping at multiple dealers and asking what certification is required for the manufacturer to back them up...

Thanks for all the input on the tech schools. I went to a few dealers and I didn't hear one good thing about MMI. I was told most guys coming out of there don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. The classes add up to $22 grand and that includes the tools. My cousin went to FL and he said it was impossible to find a job and it wasn't at all like what the school reps told him it would be. I started online corses though Education Direct for about $700, up get a starter tool set but the books suck. I learned more going to the library.
