: Resistors on flashers
Wheelie 08-15-2004, 08:46 PM My led turn signals blink kinda fast, so I try to install resistors, they(resister) gets very hot, instructions say dont let them touch any plastic, actually I just installed one resister and tried it, if I install all 4 will the temp not be as bad? weeeeeeeeeee
By-Tor 08-15-2004, 09:18 PM I'm no electrician wheelie, but if you are not happy with the results after installing all four resistors, you can try this. It works like a charm and you only need one. You can also adjust the flash rate to what ever you like.

Wheelie 08-15-2004, 10:01 PM That looks easier to wire than soldiering 4 resistors, I wonder if that gets hot?weeeee
gntbldr 08-15-2004, 11:49 PM Wheelie, You need to go to Radio Shack or something and get some High Wattage resistors so they won't get as hot because they dissipate more heat. They are usualy larger in diameter ranging up to a 1/4" in diameter and at times have heat sinks around them too. They stay cool under constant draw.
if you want the flash rate to be slower increase the Ohm rating to the desired rate with a few different rated cheap resistors and when you find the right one head back and buy the high wattage ones.
just my suggestion...
Got a question though, did your directionals come with resistors?
Wheelie 08-16-2004, 12:19 AM Came with two for the front and two for the rear. weeee

By-Tor 08-16-2004, 05:20 AM Not sure if that one I mentioned gets hot but it has been in my brothers bike for 12,000 miles without problem.
gntbldr 08-16-2004, 12:07 PM By-Tor,Wheelie Has to run resistors with his setup because the LED's need them to have the correct voltage go to them.
Wheelie them are 10 watt 7.5 Ohm ceramic resistors and ceramics get HOT easy and stay that way. You may benefit from getting some Higher wattage resistors (like lets say 20W so they'd emit half the heat that those do) and if you can get some with aluminum jacketed heatsink looking resistors you'd be in the $ for cool running circuitry.
May be a bit pricey but they'd be worth it for safety's sake. You could also go up in resistance (ohm's) and slow down the flash rate too.
I'll see if I can find anything for you here at work or at least find a link to some that'd fit the bill.....
Wheelie 08-16-2004, 12:24 PM Thanks guys. weee
By-Tor 08-16-2004, 12:44 PM Gnt, that thing I suggested is basically an adjustable resistor that you tap into the main signal harness and it takes care of everything. You only need one for the whole bike. If you only had LEDs on one end of the bike, then you only tap into that half of the harness. My brother has integrated LEDs in the rear and LED flush mounts up front. No need to go it the trial by error way with this one, and for that price it sure beats all that soldering. No fuss, no muss 8) Try it, you'll like it. Took me 5 or 6 minutes to do the job once the seat was off. BUY IT! BUY IT!................... Then you can tell me I'm your hero
gntbldr 08-16-2004, 01:32 PM I gotcha BT. It's a potentiometer.
Wheelie will still have to run the resistors that came with the kit to have the circuit run correctly with the way his led's are configured. That's why it came with them and if he was to get that pot. he could lower the main voltage and therefore slow down the flash rate And decrease the heat that the stock resistors would emit because there would be less current and voltage running to them.
I called around and looked around and most places only sell the ceramic insulated resistors so in order to reduce the heat any more one would have to run two 10W resistor in parallel but both would be double what the desired resistance would be because when you parallel a load with another you talke the two resistances and then add them up and divide by the amount of loads in the circuit.
2 10W 15ohm resistors connected together (not one after the other) would equal
1 20W 7.5ohm resistor
best to call the manufacturer to verify the use of that pot. with and or without the inline resistors because if you put too much voltage to them puppies because you didn't have the inlines' in you could easily blow the led's.
I just don't want to see you hurt them seeing's that it took soo long and so much to get them.
By-Tor 08-16-2004, 01:44 PM  I hear ya gnt.
gntbldr 08-16-2004, 02:00 PM ok :!: Woot Woot! I just got off the phone with a smarter person at Radio Shack and I found
20W 8ohm resistor p/n 271-120 for $2.29 each!
that would take place of the stockers and will slow down the flash rate by just a little but reduce the heat by half.
Wheelie 08-16-2004, 02:45 PM (Elvis voice) Thankya, Thankya very much. weeeeeeeee
gntbldr 08-16-2004, 02:54 PM hyuck hyuck, yer wealcome thar Wheelie
fukinnuts 08-17-2004, 01:13 PM These cheap fuckers who sell the aftermarket signals should include the right resistors in the package. Or at least tell you what resistor you need.
By-Tor 08-17-2004, 01:17 PM Agreed!
keepup 08-17-2004, 04:14 PM why use the resistor??? i have lp flushmount and led hotbody undertail and everything works at the same time. I just didn't connect the running lights flasher only for the front was that wrong? Is is gonna cause a problem anywhere??
gntbldr 08-17-2004, 04:25 PM no. no worries. them led's have the resistors built into them from what I can think of.
Wheelies are a bit special due to their configuration.
with you not hooking up the running lights is what you were suppsed to do unless the front LED's had two input wires which I don't believe they do. If you were to hook up both wires (running and signal) together then the LED's would remain on constantly.
keepup 08-17-2004, 04:29 PM sounds good thanks i was gettin worried there
spikedog 08-17-2004, 08:16 PM hey, mister wheele man, if you dont know what you are doing than you shouldnt be fucking with it. next time you come across the minnesota border let me know, i will show you some fucking insane roads, later dude 8)
