well i was going out with a few friends wed night and we got stuck in traffic so the bike got a little hot but never over 218 degrees F.....well when we got off that road every thing was fine until i came to a stop......when the light finally thrned green i went to pull the clutch in and shift it into 1st it made a werid noise down on the left side by the front sproket like....a noise like a spun baraing on a skateboard with no oil on it (werid) now dont laugh at me for this but it sounded like this.....(eeehe he he heee) say it kinda fast....well i got nerivous and rode slow till i got to the place down the block but no more noise....parked it and looked at the bike with a few other riders and see nothing wrong......they tell me that im a hypocondriac with my bike that im always hearing some noises....then i left and went home by myself....30 miles form home....rode 50 mph at first....nothing....stepped it up a little to 75....nothing....then when i hit the bridge that was 7 miles long i opened it up to about 120-130 mph with some quick blasts....nothing it still rode fine.....wtf.....has any one heard a noise like this?....is it just me?...should i take it in to get checked?
no smells no leaks no nothing and temp stayed at 180 and below on the way home and it shifted normal....the sproket is fine and so is the chain....i am very anal when it comes to maintance on my bike

i use amsoil 10-30 with a honda oil filter and change the oil every 2000 miles and the oil is up to the top line so no low oil (im switching to 20-50 since the temp in florida is rising for summer??????????? help me please anyone

My .02¢

10-30 is too light of an oil for the 954. The oil weight has to do with the bearing clearances so I would change it right away.

The owner manual shows 10-40 to use down to 5°F. I put 10-30 in once and didn't like the way it was sounding so I changed it right away.

I live in Vegas and it rarely gets to freezing temps so I just keep 20-50 in all the time.

i am very anal
You might not want to mention that anywhere near PiP....

I used to hear all kinds of noises in mine too. A friend told me, "IT'S A HONDA". Well, I don't hear 'em anymore. How many miles has she got on her? I noticed that my bike has mellowed a bit with age. BTW, 218 shouldn't cause any problems at all. I've had mine quite a ways over that.
Throw in some watter wetter. It works.

Isnt weight differences for temps? What does a bearing clearance have to do with that? Please explain to me im uneduacated. weee

Hey Wheelie,

It has to do with viscosity and the clearance in the bearings. Most newer cars call for 10-30 or 5-30. Older cars use 10-40 or 20-50.

The smaller the clearance in the bearings the thinner(viscous) the oil has to be.

The difference between 10-30 and 20-50 is like looking at gas vs water.

Gas is a lot thinner and will seep faster into smaller spaces than will water.

Not sure if that is the best analogy but best I can come up with for now.

i guess dont worry about the noise??????????????

Yea I dont think you have too. Mine makes weird noises sometimes and it hasnt come appart yet. If its running above 185 going down the interstate then you definatly need to get something in there to cool it down. Getting it up to 215 and above is getting hot so the engine Ice sounds like a must.
As far as the noise dont worry about it, if it is a real problem then it will keep doing it and even get worse.

hey i really thank you alot....i never thought about it like that....and going down the highway it runs from 176 to 180 so theres no problem there...but im still going to put it in my baby.....also the amsoil 20-50 full syn.......by the way some dude told me that amsoil sucks....we use it in every thing from my dads hotrod to my truck to my bike....even the go-cart (honda cr250 shifter) and never had any problems......whats your opinion on oil???

motol
amsoil <-------- i use 10-40 full syn switching to 20-50 full syn
repsol
mobil 1 <------- i didnt think this would be good for bikes...cause of the high rev factor our motors turn...made for a car that turns 7000 rpm and under i thought???

by the way i dont use 10-30.....i ment to say 10-40....switching to 20-50

AAHHHH the question of the age

I dont know everybody has an oppinion but im running Motul. Id like to give Repsol a try and see if its any better.

I have been told that its all the same oil they just label it Motorcycle and charge it up another 50%. I really dont think it matters as long as your running a good synthetic.

Motorcycle oils have better detergent packages. They are better oils. Mobil 1 20-50 V-twin full synth has the best detergent package on the market. It resists breaking down. Get a good motorcycle oil. Full synthetic.
