Hi guys,
I just got my bike back from the dealer; it was in for routine maint. I noticed my chain looked like it had been coated in a white/gray powdery crap. Any idea what this is, and what's the best way to keep it clean and lubed.
Thanks -- Will

My guess is that they lubed it with Lithium for you at the dealer. I use silkolene chain lube every other ride.

So do you just spray the lube over the entire chain (while up on a stand) or do you hit certain points?

I use a rag and hold below the chain and around the sides of it where the chain is under the swingarm and spray the lube down on the rollers from the top side of the chain...
Then when the rag gets soaked up with the lube it wipes off the grime on the sides while I am spinning my tire from point to point to make sure all the links get a good soaking.
The center of the cahin with the rollers and the o-rings on both sides of the rollers is the area that needs the lube.
Don't use wd-40 because it breaks down the rubber compound.
It's ok to use to clean it but I preffer honda chain lube for that and then put on some chain wax after it's cleaned..
Make sure you let the lube dry before you go for a spin so all the gook doesn't fling.

I wait untill I get home froma good ride because the chain is warm and that helps lube it. I will put my bike on the stand and pop her into first anl let the clutch out and I spray all sides while the chain is in motion.

Gnt covered it all as usual...

It's better to lube a hot chain right after a ride. As the links cool, they will contract and actually pull in any grease that are on the seals.

I use some kick ass shit, I cannot remember the name though, but it is white, and it dries quickly and doesn't cover your rear rim...
