First let me say this is not for the kind of people that are afraid of opening a motor, or turning a wrench. You have been warned.
Next things needed that you may not have before you start:
Locking compound
Sealant
New 32mm lock nut for clutch
220 grit sandpaper and/or 400 grit
Now if you go here- http://cbr929rr.com/shiftkit.htm -and check out the kit he bought and installed for $199.00. Nice.
Looking at why the Honda shifts so hard I noticed the stock shift wheel is very rough on the outer edge. First I hand sanded the wheel to take out the pits and rough edges. I didn't take it down much, just smoothed it.
Next if you look at the star wheel I rolled the sand paper around a pen and sanded first-neutral-second valleys with the sandpen. I put more pressure towards the neutral lobe so the wheel sits slightly further in the valley of the star.
Then I put the sand paper on the ground and smoothed out the other lobes to give it a little less of a peak. I also sanded all valleys and lobes to smooth out the metal.
Now it shifts like a Cadillac. Dang what a difference.
If anyone in Vegas want to take a ride to check it out just send me an email.
