: How badly does Crosswinds and Headwinds effect
How badly does a crosswind or a headwind effect your top speed?
Winds today were 12mph with gusts of 19mph. I went on a top speed run today and couldn't get my speedo past 162mph indicated.
It was windy but I figure it shouldn't effect the reading that bad.
What do you guys think?
Black1000RR 05-01-2005, 08:16 PM more than you would think... if there was no density to the atmosphere you would gain 15 to 20 mph over a windless day so add wind to the equasion and it does a lot. just look at nascar a piece of flapping tape is enough to drop those racers by 5 to 10 spots.

Thanks dude. I was starting to get pissed at my motor guy. lol. I'm so dumb some times.
Can you give me more info on air density and stuff.
Thanks.

So basically, it was a combination of things. It was the Air Density creating more drag than usual, combined with the crosswinds, that slowed me down. Not to mention my tall gearing.
So basically, when it is 70-75 degrees out with 3-5mph winds, I should be back up to speed, huh?
Black1000RR 05-01-2005, 09:19 PM yeah it is king of a weird deal but crosswind especially slows you down the bike is designed to be aerodynamic from the front not the side (would look kinda kewl if it was LOL) and the colder it is out the more dense the air the denser the air the more drag it produces, but on the other hand colder dense air also creates more horsepower. but yeah it is the increased drag you are dealing with.
Anonymous 05-01-2005, 09:37 PM remember also you have a map, its not a flexible map your map is set, so if you have a slight divet in your map up top the crosswinds might not hold you back all that much, but enough to prevent you from pulling out of the divet

My bike has an air temp sensor that is supposed to dynamically adjust the map based on air temp. When I click to see the reading it just gives me 3 small dashes. I think it is malfunctioning. That could be the problem as well.
When the air temp sensor malfunctions, the bike only supplies enough fuel for the 0 map.
I'm emailing my motor guy this morning to see what's up. He may need to replace the air temp sensor for me. I'm going to look at the bike this morning to make sure it's even on there.
gntbldr 05-02-2005, 07:04 AM all the above is wher I was thinking to after wanting to post up that a 1-4 mph loss on the top end is normal due to wind...
Anonymous 05-02-2005, 07:08 AM kelly from kms in mesa is supposed to be putting out new fueling systems that self adjust a few hundred times a second or some crazy shit like that soon, cant wait
adrenalinjunkee 05-02-2005, 07:33 AM If you have enough horsepower, you will be able to top it out no matter what headwind is there. It's all a horsepower game when you talk 150+ mph. Bikes are no more aerodynamic than a bulldozer with the blade up, at least not much better. It's just a simple horsepower game.
Maybe there is a problem with your fuel management. Also, on a dyno, it's extremely easy to top-out a bike because you don't have to worry about drag. (unless the dyno has a brake...)Maybe you should invest some money in Nitrous, works for me!
I found out that when the air temp sensor is malfunctioning it defaults to a map that is set for 70 degrees fahrenheit.
So when I did the run it was 50 degrees out. So my bike should have enrichened the mixture but it didn't because the sensor isn't working efficiently. Then on top of that it was windy and the air was more dense creating drag. I guess all of that combined prevented me from hitting the last 20mph.
Plus remember too, with my headwork (porting and polishing) I have increased airflow to the combustion chamber so even under normal circumstances, I would need a richer map. So I'm guessing that I'm down 10-15hp. I think my bike makes anywhere from 138-140 on pump gas and anywhere from 142-145 on race fuel.
So I took the front underpan off this morning from the upper fairing and disconnected the Oxygen Sensor. Sure enough, the little bulb that is supposed to be attached at the end of the sensor is missing. IT'S BROKEN.
Motor guy is sending me another one free of charge. I hope to receive it tomorrow.
I hope this resolves the problem.
Anonymous 05-03-2005, 08:56 AM its good you figured it out so soon, my guess
METEORES DID IT!!!
thatll be 20dollars
Nycs 1000 05-04-2005, 12:42 PM JESUS CHRIST nate just ride the fuckin thing..
By-Tor 05-04-2005, 12:47 PM Bwahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My temp sensor doesnt work............
Cross winds bother me...............
My bike runs too hot...............
My alternator doesn't keep up with the electrical system..............
I'm scared to ride on the streets anymore.................
I spent too much money on the bike so now I need a junk-box-every-day bike............
Like NYCS1000 said, ride that bitch Goldilocks
Nycs 1000 05-04-2005, 01:28 PM Nate u are a fuckin HAMPSTER!!!!!!!
