Getting ready to change the oil in the 954 here real soon. I'm probably going to run Amsoil synthetic in it. Was curious what anybody thinks about synthetic and what they use. Thanks

i think changing my oil every 2k miles with regular honda pro oil will be sufficient for the 954.

It's a honda, it's rock solid imo, and can handle conventional oil just fine.

Synthetic is kindof a waste of $$ imo. I spend 11 bucks on the filter and 12 bucks on the oil now. No need to be paying like 6-8 bucks per quart or more for those synthetics, unless you put some massive mileage on and change it like once every 5000 miles.

If synthetic were needed, Honda would recommend it. Just my opinion :)

I dont know I use blend and it seems to help the cluncky shifting. Im gonna go with full next time to see if it smothes out the tranny.

I've been using Amsoil synthetic for the last 2 years, first in my 929 and now in my 954, great stuff, smoother shifting and runs cooler

My brother's R-1 was the same way real cluncky until he ran full synthetic and now its real smooth. I was concerned that it might start the clutch slipping. Did you have any problem with that? Im thinking you didnt. Im gonna get full syn in it soon to see if it helps the tranny some more.

if you get Any oil just make sure it doesn't read "energy conserving" in the circle stamp on the back of the bottle or "high mileage" in it's title.

no matter what oil your using..if your riding hard you should change every 500 miles..these high reving motors brake it down fast..on the track they change the oil every race 20+ laps..for regular riding 1000-1500 miles my opinion..
I use Castrol..the same shit you use in a car and I havent had a problem and I ride my shit hard..real hard..

Same here, Castrol20w50. 20 yrs and never a problem.

Well Castrol is the same thing I use in my truck. Well I can save big on that rather than buying motul.
By the way stunna what do you consider hard? When im pushin a little mines at around 9 or 10 grand and stays there.

Oh yea I forgot youre on that 600. well if you came down here there isnt that many places you can run full boar like that unless you have a death wish. Most of the twisties will allow 1st through 3rd but not much more than that, exept on the highway. The fun places will allow generally 2nd most of the time cause you really cant go much faster than that without a misshap, and thats running track tires. Well its time to change the oil :!: Later

1st 2nd up to 6th..the bike revs high in every gear..you dont have to be topped out in 5th or 6th to brake down the oil..
yeah the Mobile 1 for bikes is the shit to get but it cost alot ..but if you plan on changing your oil every 1000 miles castrol will do the job..I use to run it in all my bike then I started using the Agip oil but i didnt like the idea of having a 50 gallon drum in my garage and all my boys coming here to change there oil so I just started using the castrol again..

Thanks for all the replies. I just put Amsoil 10W-40 Motorcycle Oil in it this past weekend. I am totally impressed with it. The shifting is as smooth as glass. No clutch slipping at all. No more clunky shifting going from 1st to 2nd. Damn it is good to be out on the 954 again!!!

Yeah full syn will smooth up the tranny.

A clunky tranny is a pretty good indicator that you need an oil change.

I tried Mobil 1 20-50W V twin formula for the first time.

An oil guru reccommended it from one of the other sites. It has more lubricants and some other shit in it then the other oils. Plus the 20-50 won't turn to water as quick when it gets beat on, I think it was called oil shear or something.

So far it ahs been 1500 miles and no problems.

It is exp though 6.99 a qt.

changed oil today with Motorex Top Speed 4T 10W/40 full synthetic. Shifting is night and day smoother. will find out this weekend if engine runs cooler. Shit is expensive but lube is the last thing I want to skimp on. Probably dont need to spend this much on oil but what the hell.

Just wanted to follow up on the Motorex oil. Got to push hard on the bike on sunday (200 mile loop) and could'nt be happier with the way the bike is shifting. First to second is 100% smoother and the rest of the gear changes are like glass. Full synthetic is definately the way to go.

200 mile loop sounds like fun right about now, good thing it's Friday.
How was the temp during the ride ? It gets pretty damn hot here in the summer and bringing the temp down would be great.

Can't say that I have seen any dif in temp 702. Been ridin the bike to work the past 3 days and temp seems the same as before. I would look into a coolant additive to help out.

If your bike is new, you might want to run organic oil for at least a few cycles to seat the piston rings before switching to synthetic.
