went to drill out the baffle on my can. neglected to weld the drill bit to the extension. lost the bit inside the can. big time.

oh well, time to pick up the Arrow from the dealer on my Honda Card.. no biggie..

then went to rip out the honeycomb from the catalytic converter. thing busted out of it's spot-weld bracket Whole. no way to get it out the exhaust port after hours of diggin and tryin, said screw it, took out the dremel and cut a flap in the cat. got the honeycomb out.
Horay!

NOT. went to go weld it closed and I found out fast how NOT to weld titanium. now the header looks like god touched it it's soo holy.

soooo I bought a new header off ebay for a buy it now price. haven't heard a word from the seller. so I emailed him. twice. still no word.

soooo I'm wondering if that $ got pissed away too.

soooo I called up the dealer to find out the Arrow header is $620. asked the parts guy to check availabilty. that info will be in tomorrow but I'm going to call him back right after I click submit and tell him to order it anyway.

one heck of an expensive weekend..

way to go Jagermiester! it least something went well. lol....

That blows!!!!

I've had plenty of weekends like that. And I couldn't be mad at anyone else because it was my own damn fault.

what size drill bit did you use to punch the baffle? and do you just go through the baffle you can see, or are there more in there you need to hit?

someone needs to make a write-up on this. my exhaust needs more bark.

hey, at least you've got a full exhaust now :-D

You know sometimes brother we ought to just leave crap alone :bopindah:

gntbldr
10-24-2005, 05:44 PM
yeah, just the baffle plate that you can see is the one you drill through. some have actually even taken a chissel and bashed a hole in it. and yes there is another plate behind that one that you do not drill into. the one behind that has a tube welded through it on the right hand side that leads to the mid pipe.

well my drill bit went into that pipe but it then gets stuck there. so it fell inbetween that last backplate with the tube in it and the front baffle plate that I originally drilled into. and then some more and more and more to make a Monster size hole after using the chissel to connect the dots.

well inbetween them two baffle plates is a chamber that leads to the labryinth inside the can and the drill bit is stuck inside the inside can. so I'd need to cut through two walls to get at it and it'll be sitting in one of the thin chambers that the exhaust flows through to be pushed through the baffling...

yup, can only be mad at myself for not taking that little extra step and for saying fuckit after that and getting carried away ignorantly afterwards.
hahaha
and I will have a full exhaust on it now. HAHAHAH
now to make sure I don't get pissy with that stuff too!. :P j/k...

that sucks bro. i have 3/8" bit that's about 2 feet long. that should do it. if that somehow gets stuck in there i'll go buy a lottery ticket.

so i'm assuming that the catalytic converter is not removable?

no you wise ass. it is. :P

just not after you had a Shitty night at work the whole week pretty much and had 5 shots of Jagermiester with energy drink before you mess up the can and then move on to the cat. LOL

If one breaks up the cat inbetween the holding points on the rim that is spot welded to the header pipe all will be fine.
It'll be in like three pieces then.
only bad part is all the debris in the header.

I was willing to just start it up for a second and rev it a lil bit to get the shit out even though it's not a good idea.

The best thing to do is to take the header off before beating the shit out of the honeycomb which is exactly what you will do with a hammer and chissel after you drill a few 3/8" pilot holes to play connect the dots with with the chissel...

OK, a couple of things I have to get off my chest............ and you probably don't want to hear them, but anywhoo.........

1: You should have told me that you were gonna drill out your baffle and I would have mailed you the 2 foot long drill bit I made by welding a 1/2" bit to a 1.5' long length of 1/2" rod. I'm a professional welder so you know it would not fall apart.

2: Please don't try to weld anything other than steel with your welder that is set up for welding mild steel before calling either Jimmy or me first.

3: Sorry you had to replace the entire system, that money could have bought you a rear Ohlins which I think has a greater smiles to dollar ratio.

4: Sounds like the inexpensive little 600rr is becoming quite the money pit

Hope that wasn't too big of a kick in the nuts  I know you'll still love me in the morning

10-25-2005, 11:10 AM
yeah, he called me after he did it

but even then i was unsure about Titanium welding...that's not a very common application around here.

but i know now

By-Tor

Titanium is a bitchy material to weld. You can't weld it with steel. Best to TIG weld it and you'll still be best off if you back flow the weld area with gas. Any impurity or Oxygen will ruin the job.

i knew it needed to be tig welded, just wasn't sure what with. it can also be patched with stainless steel and 56% silver using black flux......if appearance isn't too much of a big deal.

thanks. :) I'm thinkin so. tis why I'm getting the Arrow headers to paint up too.

now I'm actually thinking of taking up Turbo with his advice somewhat.

second mortgage on the home Here I come!!!

Jim,

Personally, I wouldn't even get a 1000RR if I were you. The 600RR handles better, is much lighter and you could take 2Gs and build that motor to 130hp easily.

You would put a serious beatdown on a lot of sleepers.

Carbon can with blacked out pipe and end caps? Will look very stealth on the little black RR. 8)

Did you degrease all the parts and scuff them down a bit with a red Scotch Brite pad first?

gntbldr
10-25-2005, 08:16 PM
nope, actually I pissed all over them. and then had the fan dry them off. lol...

no sir. I didn't do shit. them things were rough enough the way they came, they've been tossed around the dealer for quite some time and had some real nice scratches on them. no oily residue like I had with my full akrapovic for the 9'er. very coarse and dry to the touch.

did them up way after I started slamming even more jager so my head was sooo far up my ass I was lucky to remember to cover the bike for the overspray.

I'll give them a good rubdown with some 800 when I get my headers in adn repaint them along with prepping and painting the headers.

to be honest after my first mistake I got the "i don't give a fuck" attitude real bad, real quick and got reckless. but that's obvious izntit. :P

Piss? Your piss could be used as aircraft stripper

I make no guarantees as to how well the paint will hold up on the header close to the head. We were able to burn 2 feet of the paint off of my friends headers on his 530 hp 429 Ford motor in his race truck. I know I get the head pipes on my 400EX to glow at night while wringing it's neck  I'm sure the same happens on the bike too.

yup. no doubt. soooooooo I will be only painting from the back of the oil pan/back and up to the mid pipe connector. I'd rather do that then have it all burn up and look uber nasty. . .

Thanks for all the helpfull stuff BT. ya rock big guy! ya know that?
