: Machining up a new rear disc.
Hi there.
I was thinking of making up a new rear disc. Designing the thing isnt a problem. I can easily draw up a new design, nothing too flash...just make the outside edge a bit wavey and cut some "cbr" logo's into it.. I have quotes on laser cutting out the disc from 5mm Stainless plate, but i cant find much info on the type of stainless stock to use.. Ive heard that a 400 or 420 series stainless is the way to go?? and engineers out there who have chewed over the same fat in there heads.... Also hoped that someone could recommend a pad/combination that works well with the stainless chosen (save me from trying out all the combinations).
Cheers
gntbldr 11-04-2005, 01:30 AM that's a unique approach.
me? my unedumicated guess is the harder the steel you go the softer tha pad you want but all that depends on how you use your brakes I'd say. but that's just a thought...
MetalScorpio 11-04-2005, 08:02 AM that would be different for sure 8)
MetalScorpio 11-10-2005, 06:33 AM I had mine done a long time ago, got the information from Kyle Racing site and send it out, had it back the same week for a little bit of money

Yep, ive been to his site.. - some nice things there.. I had thought of drilling out the disc holes, but then i went down to the local laser cutting shop here..they'd cut out a design for about $60 (aussie) as long as they had a DXF file of the design...luckily i was an Engineer in a previous life so have the CAD capabilities LOL.. Also i do work for a FAB shop, so geting some plate will cost me beer tokens...just need to decide on a reasonable "look" and what exotic Stainless to use..
gntbldr 11-10-2005, 03:13 PM what about something that looks like a saw blade?
Yep.. I thought of a sawtooth design.. im gonna design it around the pic below, just change the dimensions to suit the1!KRR rear disc.

1WHEELMAX 11-10-2005, 03:52 PM that looks bad ass.
Well heres the first concept drawing..maybe change some of the "oggy" logos with a 1000rr or a rr or something

gntbldr 11-10-2005, 06:30 PM cool. literally and figuratively.
1WHEELMAX 11-10-2005, 06:32 PM I like it, once you start making em I may look at getting one from ya with 1wheelmax and 1000rr.com on it.
Even if I don't mount it it would make a cool thing for the wall.
MetalScorpio 11-10-2005, 06:36 PM that looks good as hell. Nice job. I see you're good on CAD ah!
Well ive stuck the drawing on the bike to get a rough idea of what its going to look at... apologese for the bad pic..but its a camera phone lol
Once i get this made, ill post the DXF file and you can just take it down to your nearest fab shop (that have a laser cutter and you can do your own.. As im in Australia, itll work out cheaper that way i guess.. Just want to chat with someone into brakes and suss out the best Stainless mix, and maybe a preferred pad for stainless....The design is far from the minimalist designs ive seen so chances for warpage or pretty remote...

gntbldr 11-10-2005, 08:34 PM let me know when you are ready to put up that DFX file. I'll put it on the forum's host and set a link to it. you can email it to gntbldr@yahoo.com when the time comes.
that, my friend, looks awesome.
I have a friend that has a plasma cutter that the DFX file will upload to and don't be surprised when you see that design on a few of our bikes here. :D :D :D
MetalScorpio 11-11-2005, 08:13 AM that look great. i should work wonderful too with all those air pockets and holes for the pad to stay cool
Big Daddy 11-11-2005, 08:13 PM Dude Ill take one of those badoys when they are ready great idea man. Keep us posted. 8)
