Birthdays often being the one day out of the year I sit back get drunk, hide from friends and family and just reflect on my life's failures and acoplishments. This started out as no differnt then the last tweentyeight birthdays that I have had. The weather in central North Carolina is usually cold and wet this time of year and up until today started out par for the course. But somewhere around late afternoon early evening things changed. Rain clouds rolled out and the sun broke through. So as I sit in the garage between a virtual museum of motorcycles trying to complete my usual birthday check list.
For those of you who don't have this small personal list of birthday satisfaction mine goes as followed 1) Wake up get out of bed and and haul ass away from the house and everybody I know. 2) Drive to next town and proceed to tie one on{always go to next town so as a}not to run into anyone I know.b)If I get too lippy from the eight to ten crown and cokes Im not kicked outta anywhere im gonna wanna go back to anyway. At least not for another 364 days.3) Attempt to contemplate the universe. Usually by drink five im contemplating nothing more than the navel (of the waithress that is) which usually doesnt get me any farther in life than I was when I showed up.
But thats another story in and of itself. Now faced with a personal delema, which is to break tradition or not.Opon much thought I decide to ride CR250 is in pieces so thats not an option, belive it or not I decide on the Harley! In true vonzipper fasion I don chaps, we dont give a damn about the west coast tee shirt and the cou de gra one chrome plated sticker trashed Hitler helmet. Getting the picture arent ya? Well picture this after all that the damn thing wouldnt start! Harley not startin who wouldda thought. Well damn it now its on like donkey kong!! Im dressed like a friggin tool just to ride some bike I otherwise wouldnt be cought dead on; so what do ya do? Tell ya what I did!!! I did what any self respectin snatch magnet rider would do..... I got the Keys to the Honda.
Bringing me to the whole purpose of the story after about two and a half hours of riding I happen to drive by the local hangout(for all you yankees thats southern for pub/bar) and low and behold there were about six bikes out front that I knew,Yup you guessed it my loyal riding buddies,So I did what any good birthday having friend would do I stopped! I figured if nothing else I could get a free birthday drink or ten from'em.
Now not being a big fan of country music Tuesday just happens to hee haw night. Well we had few drinks no biggie and I heard this song Id never heard before and I seemed to some up life right there in a damn 3:45 country song. Well I was moved almost touched(coulda just been tanked but anyway) as we were leaving we all cought this stop light and there was a but riding a moped wearing a Harley jacket and the same stupid ass Hitler helmet I was.So im sittin at this light next to him laughing my ass off to my self try my best not to make eye contact with him and then it happened!!! he started reving his ten h.p. 50cc hot rod at me.
Well this will never do Im gonna have some fun right!?! Wrong!! light turns green he damn near 12o'clocks this moped{I shit you not} Startled, maybe a bit tipsy I wack the trottle a few time for show of course;dumpthe clutch and....stall my buddy behind me ass ends my and I drop my bike. Its right about now that song I loved so much just a short time ago starts playing in my head " Im not as good as I once was but Im as good once as I ever was" The moral I guess is change is not always a good thing and beware of country music and Harley guys on suped up mopeds.
