: Cross country on my klr
gntbldr 04-27-2004, 03:05 AM Well... I'm back from the ride and have just had time to get back into the swing of things again and wrote up something(s) on my one main stop during my over 3800 miles in 7 days.
(I just deleted the links to the other forum so as to not mislead people to a member only site... SCROLL DOWN FOR THE WRITE UP... :D)
I'll bust out into details with more pics later. Time for me to hit the hay.

olderRR. 04-27-2004, 11:21 AM Right on, GNT! That's cool. Next time, swing this way!

I will bring it all home to here just need some more time... headed to work right now
gntbldr 04-28-2004, 04:44 PM gonna copy and paste while I'm at work and it just slowed down. ...
for starters I got the idea when and invitation came about on the other forum I dwell at and that was Walt's (TeamRedneck) Invitaion to Camp and Ride (http://www.klr650.net/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2775)
I wanted to go for a trip anyway and from there it goes like this............................
Talk about a ride well worth the trip.
That'd be the case for me coming all the way from Port Washington,WI and headed to Gloster,MS. It was 5:38 pm on friday April 16th and I finally broke down and called up Walt (Captain Redneck to us yankee recruits, lol) and got a re-cap on the one turn that'd lead me to some salvation away from my saddle. Heading down the road to Walts, uh sry..., The Capn's place I see some big ol southern boy scooting up and skidding in the dirt on his ,I was like... what the heck kinda bike is this???hahaha, Tenguy 2 all the while waving and arm to track me down...
With a real hearty welcome that there was opening to the grand 'ol weekend at Walt's.
After I met Cap'n Walt's wife and children and we got the formals out of the way it was Team Redneck Time!!!
Right away the wrenching comenced. About ten minutes into Walt and I working on our bikes Joe came rolling up on his centerfold worthy stock black and green klr. pimp machine... hehe.
So here's Walt working at replacing his rear tire and tube while joking around with some new friends as one of them breaks away to play asian tourist with his camera.
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E232353436%3B39 9ot1lsi
btw, I need to say right here and now that the food you had for us Walt (to me) was fit for a king.
It wasn't but any time at all after I got there and there was that fabulous fried Bass to munch on.
So fine it didn't need anything but a well gratious belly to go into.haha
So while I was just getting done running a new clutch cable another klr comes up running 2-up. It was Chuck and Carl with Chuck's family in the truck with two little dirt bikes and Carl's klr all in the back of.
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E232353436%3B39 7ot1lsi
Now Here We Go!!!!!!! Now there's 5 klr's in one garage and one should know that that means Fun!
After Walt got his tire to seat and I got my bike back together from working on the carb mods, jury rigging my petcock (from it's leak out of the breather plate that came from a small slit in the diaphram), and running a new clutch cable we toasted a round or two and were all getting ready to hit the hay.
gntbldr 04-28-2004, 04:57 PM It wasn't long after one of the 2 roosters at Camp Redneck would sign of with a pair that all the adults started waking up.
Good Strong coffee a brewing, the sound of the birds chirping while the mist of the new morning gets cast away from the sun in it's rising, and whispers of the grown ups talk of what to be made to fit into our bellies to keep this awesome weekend riding on.
What was it I heard in my half unconscious stupor??? No bacon??? what is an awesome omelet with out beautiful bacon?...
No Worries!!! Cap'n Walt to the rescue (sry Walt , no Dixie Flag, heheh)
Now with friday night being Walt's showing of maker of fabulous fried bass we were given the pleasure on saturday mornings meal by the maker of Chuck's awesome omelet cuisine.
Serious fellas. That food was dinamite.
and I'm not to the telling of the crawfish boil yet either!
Now we are back where most men find themselves on a weekend such as this and that's in the garage.
Soon after the survivors of the first night at Camp redneck for the one and only Team Redneck 2004 KLR rally were feeling the good eatins settle for the ride soon to be had Troy, Walt's brother in law, came roling up with his 2001 klr in tow.
Oh boy oh boy!!! there's 6 now.
We get to unloading Troy's bike and shooting some more shit
and here comes Rusty and Buddy only minutes apart!!!
Holy Cats! That's 8 KLR's now! boy it's a site to see for me having traveled over 1000 miles bike back for the fun of it
sooo here we are all ready to ride and ready we were!
from left to right it goes like this
Team Redneck 2004
Chuck, Buddy, Walt, Jim, Troy, Joe, Rusty, and Carl
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E232353436%3B3% 3A4ot1lsi
Then...... Off We Went!!!
So we head off down a bunch of real nice curvy and gripy back roads to some 2 track that led us to The Ledbetter's deer cabin and waters were that kick bass fish came from Walt served us up the night before.
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E2323534374747o t1lsi
and we are chilling out enjoying the nastolgia of the event and the beauty that surrounds us...
wth I am I talking about??? hahah we're stopping and shooting the shit. lol
and I'm playing little asian tourist again taking pics of all of our bikes.
below you have the klr crew
Rusty, Carl, Buddy, Joe, Walt, Jim, Troy, and Chuck
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E2323534374755o t1lsi
From the deer cabin we road some more super cool curvies and hilly wooded gripy roads and back on to some gravel roads and 2 track to a small river that Walt used to play in as a kid. This was our first stop away from the private lands and boy was it fun getting there. We were riding our klrs on all the elements that it's sold for by now and each of us were feeling the flow as of then so it was a short stop and back off to Riding!
Miles and miles of boldly grades of dirt, sand and gravel roads with some more street riding up ahead as of when we see a low flying crop duster.
We waved and the pilot waved back faster than the questions could come out of my mouth Walt was leading us up the the landing strip for a peek.
Far Out! We all lined up by the run way for what I thought was just a sighting of the low flying turbine driven yellow beast of a duster and we got a complete set of fly bys with a super low scraper over our heads!!!
Way Cool. one thing after another.
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E2323534374756o t1lsi
Now after the air show we ventured on to ride on Many of the most well given roads to satisfy a dual purpose machine best of all the klr.
I myself am weighing in at 185 lbs for this 5'8er and was glad to have put in 7" spacers in my front forks for some extra spring and stability on the down slopes into the turns and just plain ol mistake taken lines that lead into the dull thudding impact on the face of a bump or rut or erosion way or... or...
So on we went and then at the second river site stop we got some pics taken...
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E2323534373294o t1lsi

Cap'n Walt

All in all every kinda tire did real well on all the 110 miles terrain we rode on the entire day.
The riding settled down with the departing of Buddy and Rusty but in the midst of that motion 'Ol Boy Walt's temp guage goes all whack and up to the red. So we all pull off to the side of the road to brain bash it and talked about all the ifs and ands and whatever else while we wished two of the KLR crew off to their homeward journies.
Coming to the almost imediate conclusion that the water just wasn't moving one mostly tries other things times before they find the culprit it seems.
Now the bikes are back in their shed with one waiting to cool down for the diagnosis to begin we all get ready for a night of the crawfish boil!
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E2323534373298o t1lsi
One Heck of a Day!!!
More than worth the trip on down for this yankee...
Yet the adventure continues.
There went this crawfish boil next that met my fancy to country cooking. Jimmy likey muchie.
With the whollupin wiskey wonders Chuck was mixin up it was something all them daddys stayed on down. lol.
A bunch of friends
A bunch of family
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E232353437329%3 Aot1lsi
and a Bunch of Crawfish!!!!!
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E23235343732%3A 2ot1lsi
then it was garage time again.

gntbldr 04-28-2004, 05:08 PM So there we are the6 stooges in the morning that soon turned into 5 for the ride since Carl needed to stay off some of the more intense of the roads. For some one riding the klr 650 for their first time on all the terrain we went on he gets the "it took balls" award to have done as well as he did. A teen at that that only puts on lil bikes till then.
Good thing Carl didn't come because later on we hit some of the most cool carves that had my mt21's squirming big time.
but I'm getting ahead of myself now
!st try out poor boy's temp guage goes pinned again. After the sticky thermostat was freed. It turned up being the impeller spining on the shaft. So with a proper torquing of the nut and the bike back together we went out at try # 2 to sunday.
There we go now to head out on a ride to give Joe a farewell and we run into some roads that led Joe away from the way he wanted to head so now it's down to four.
We go back to where we left off... go a bit further... and Troy gets a flat. One heck of a nail too! Good thing ya didn't hurt your old tube hey Walt?!
Now we are in wait of Troy's wife to bring the trailer.
And here comes Carl blasting up on his klr!, hahah We thought he might have changed his mind but to our surprise he brought his bike for Troy to ride.
Great gesture but we all know how beautiful it is to ride your Own machine and not as great when it's not yours... soooo It was tire changing time for the Cap'n again.
Got that babay all done in 1/2 an hour and again for the last time we went out to Ride!
1st stop was at this old arsed bridge with a big ol hole in one spot of it.
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp45%3Dot%3E2323%3 D626%3D46%3A%3D3232626379654nu0mrj
"See this flag here?."
this here's Cap'n Walt

It was from the bridge that we stopped at a local store and Walt found out about some Real Wicked twisties!!! Good thing Walt had the gps going and also knew where he was 'cause I sure didn't. lol
This one road we road down was friken far out. a down slope of maybe 3-5% and turns cut for 25-35mph that the klr railed on at more than 50mph at times.
kickin ass and takin names.
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp45%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E2323534374996o t1lsi
then a bunch of wings and harleys rolled up on the set... hahaha
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp45%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E2323534374998o t1lsi
After all the most insane of roads we go and travel a bit.
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp45%3Dot%3E2323%3 D626%3D46%3A%3D323262637965%3Anu0mrj
and we head to the last water hole for the runners back before the LA Purchase. Cool little history lesson by the store clerk.

this is the last of the split to post a 28K dial up friendly pages for Walt and whomever else...
As we wind down towards the MS River we end up this one last stop before we head back home.
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3B%3B923232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A %3D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E2323534377636o t1lsi
After seeing that happen Troy Knew it was his time for home... poor fallen bike... :P
and for us all at the time being home was Cap'n Walt's Camp Redneck.

By-Tor 04-28-2004, 05:10 PM Good stuff Gnt, definitely some good stuff :)
gntbldr 04-28-2004, 05:29 PM from my friend Chuck:
"IRON ASS JIM the Wicked Wisconsinite
Heres a pic of the wild man who rode 16 hours on a stock seat to get to the Team Redneck Rally. He was constantly looking for places to buy foam, gel pads. I wonder why? His ride took him from WI to MS, now he's in TX and will continue on to WI next week as a legend. Perhaps an Ad contract from Corbin is in his future.
Jim, give us a rundown on your trip mileage when you get back."
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3C5523232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A%3 D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E232353546%3C664o t1lsi
I put on over 3800 miles total and it all went like this...
4-15 I headed out at 7pm and got in almost 500 miles from Wi to south IL and put myself up for some rest.
When I woke the rain storm that I was racing away from had passed and with my bike all loaded up I was ready to go at around 10am. Minus the snow pants, sweatshirt, turlte neck, face mask, and winter gloves because it got Warm out!
That heat was fuel for the fire of my passion to ride and it sure was a pleasant feeling since We haven't had weather like that up here in WI yet...
So on down the road I headed and with the help of some super fast cagers I was able to draft here and there to make up time and save some gas.
I got to TeamRedneck's (Walt's place) at 5:38 and squeezed in over 600 miles in those 8 hrs.
Woot Woot! Let the weekend Begin!
.......... ................ ..............
and on from Walt's place at 11am on monday I go...
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3C5523232%7Ffp45%3Dot%3E232%3A%3 D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E232353436%3C688o t1lsi
I headed south into LA and then to the gulf via hwy 82 which was Beautifull with all the water on both sides for miles at times...
once I got into TX the road I was going to take through Galveston was closed and it wasn't long before I found myself on I-10 headed into Houston.
I gave Walt a call at hwy 146 about 20 some miles out of houston and he strongly recommended NOT to go through houston at that or any time if I wanted to keep from griefe... so I took his advice and went south on lynchburg rd (134 south).
That turned out to be an Excellent choice since I missed out on my chance to go across some water on a ferry in Galveston and hap-chanced upon this one.
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3C5523232%7Ffp45%3Dot%3E232%3A%3 D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E232353436%3C68%3 Bot1lsi
Fun ride. I had the ferry dock mate laughing at me as I was acting like a guy riding cross country on a klr and was giddy and stuff...lol
So I get to the other side to find two Wickedly cool attractions.
One being the Monument:
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3C5523232%7Ffp45%3Dot%3E232%3A%3 D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E232353436%3C695o t1lsi
and across the street was the Battleship:
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3C5523232%7Ffp45%3Dot%3E232%3A%3 D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E232353436%3C696o t1lsi
there I go again after this fun with my nose to the grind... or should I say vibe?
As you saw in my pic of me on my bike I have my tank bag to lay on with my chin resting on one of the front pouches. This was the most favored position that had the buffeting go right over my head as my ears and face went into a "dead spot" from the wind.
Down side was that everything was a blur from what my eyes would see being only 1 inch over the windscreen...
It sure helped out the gas mileage which would go up to around 47mpg stand alone and almost 50mpg while drafting on vehicles..
I turned over 650 miles in 12 hrs. total and that included bumper to bumper through south Houston for almost 2 hrs.... Amazing how many people are living there...
I got into Kerrville at 11:30 pm on monday night and was ready for some rest.
I left Walt's with arm pump surfacing in my right arm and going kinda numb so I Had to get some rest, anti inflamtories (ibuprofen) and good ol Family Love from my Step Dad and Mother.
Tuesday I bummed around with my Ma and later in the day went to visit my Nephews and bother-in-law at the ranch.
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3C5523232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A%3 D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E23235343698%3A5o t1lsi
Something that was to be duplicated the next evening on the klr to give the little tikes each a ride.
first off is Skyler's turn:
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3C5523232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A%3 D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E23235343698%3A8o t1lsi
and then Joe's turn:
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3C5523232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A%3 D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E23235343698%3A9o t1lsi
massive amounts of cattle, goats, llama's, and friggin peacocks galore
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3C5523232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E232%3A%3 D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E23235343698%3A6o t1lsi
That there put on over another 150 miles just to head to the ranch and back from my parents place.
Twas super nice being able to spend another birthday with my loved ones in the south... been over 4 yrs...!
ok, now it's thursday morning and I say bye to my rents as they head off to work.
I take a small nap and then watch the weather channel.. I find that if I scoot right away I can slip between the flash flood, tornado weather going through OK,MO,AR,TN, and IL
all packed and ready to leave.
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3C5523232%7Ffp54%3Dot%3E232%3A%3 D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E23235343698%3A%3 Aot1lsi
Right before I took off I did the preliminaries and found that the kenda270 Walt and I put on at his place held up well to TX with sustained high speeds of WOT for hours on end.
Unfortunately it baked the tire a wee bit and made the super flexy tall knobbs in the center brittle at the base.
They held up Fine with normal to hard riding with extreme engine braking on hwy 16 south of Kerrville which has some Wicked switchbacks and turns and carves posted from caution 15mph all the way up to 45mph cautions.
What did my kenda in was 6 dump clutch wheelies for my nephew before I left.
Those six spot of fun cracked ALL the center nobs at their base and within the 1641 miles from Kerrville,TX to Port Washington,WI I had a total of 5! center knobs get flung!
http://images.snapfish.com/33%3A63%3C5523232%7Ffp54%3Dot%3E232%3A%3 D327%3D%3A29%3DXROQDF%3E2323535477983ot1 lsi
now I am in need of getting another new rear tire but Walt sure save me big time with trading me my fairly decent shape mt21 for his awesome shape trailwing front tire.
Now I'm going to try out a trailwing on the rear to match the front and see how goes it.
ohhh, btw I made out with 850 miles in 13 hrs and slept in north east AR after I just caught up to one of the storm systems (flash flodd, tornado warning, and severe thunderstorms so I put myself up for the night.
I was up and at it at 11am and got no more than 200 miles and I had to put back on all my winter riding gear. The fling was then over but the fun continued!
Home is where I got at at 10:10 pm and was sooo glad to see all my kitties.
Not too able to rest since sat afternoon I went to pick up my friends trailer and got all ready to make a trip to Allenton,MI (north of Detroit) to pick up some farm equipment for my friend.
He paided me all the gas $ plus oil change $ and put $70 bucks in my pocket. Something he didn't have to do since this bud has done more than a lot for me with his full service shop I have dibs in and all...
sooo in another 17hrs or whatever I put on another 1051 miles but this time in a cage which I was glad for since now both my arms have arm pump and I needed to just sit there anyway and chill.
One heck of 9 days!!! over 5000 miles and 3800 of them were on my KLR riding with Way cool people and almost as cool roads.
Anonymous 04-28-2004, 07:00 PM man that just sounds like too much fun, hope I can try something like that someday. :D
gntbldr 04-28-2004, 07:13 PM total cost was only $300.00 for the two hotels and all the gas that the 45mpg KLR got for me. :D
I thought it wasn't acheivable but only the 1st 150 miles of all the long jaunts was the hardest...
Truck 04-28-2004, 07:47 PM Gnt, thanks man it was like I was there too. I used to do things like this before getting married and having two children. I havent had a vacation in about 10 years and it was like I was having one with you. You story telling is so good, and with the pictures it was awsome. Maybee someday Ill get to do these things again, right now I just started a new buisness and am trying to get it off the ground so theres not much time for playing. Thanks man I needed to see there is life beyond work and family.
