I'm trying to remove the swingarm on my 954. Any suggestions on how to safely do this? I am having trouble supporting the bike without the swingarm on it. I have a front and rear stand. The fron is an under fork mount, and the rear is a spool mount. I have strapped the triples to the front stand and put a block under the motor, but the balance isn't very good.

How has anyone else done this?

UKDave?

By-Tor?

Turbo? -- no I don't want your motor guys number...

I would just get a floor jack and put it under the exhaust, take off your plastics first thou.

I have the plastic off and removed the exhast after the valve. The side to side balance is tough. The shape of the oil pan is pretty irregular, so it makes jacking it wierd.

do you have anything to strap up and hook up to the rafters and your triple tree just for safetys sake?

vt954

hey vt, you got a paper back manual?

vt954
01-30-2006, 09:18 PM
No rafters in the garage. It's all sheetrocked. I may have to put some hooks into the studs to do that. I read that at least one of the rearsets has to come off, so I can't hook into those. I'll have to sleep on it I guess.

Sounds like a winner to me. I'll make the arraingments. After reading the manual, it looks like the bearings are going to be a real pain. Might have to bring it to the dealer to get them pressed out before the powdercoat. Bummer. We'll see if one of my techs at work can do it first. I dont know how important the special tools are...

gntbldr
01-30-2006, 09:46 PM
don't worry about pressing them out. I've got that covered.

Right on Max!

GNTs lucky I'm as lazy as I am -- he'd have a KTM frame and swingarm coming his way too! Probably a lawn tractor frame, and my jackstands, bike stands, mag light, and whatever else I could find!

It's a good thing we don't ride together - it would look pretty gay both with black bikes with blacked out frame and swingarms... :gay:

Maybe you should do yours in red just in case :rofl3:

Ok here is how I did it. If you look at were the side firings end there is a spot on the inside of the frame were the back of the trans is held be the frame..... I just built 2 stands out of some scrap 2x6 placed them either side of the bike and used a fiberglass garden tool handle from home depot...

The other way to do this is to use foot peg stands.

I will try to look for some pictures

Thanks guys. If I use the pegs, it doesn't look like I can still remove the swingarm bracket. I'll look into the mount like UK. I'll check it out tonight.

Max is the winner
I was stupid tired when I was screwing w/ that
I don't know what to do about the swing arm mount
I wanted it powder coated to, but my head was too screwed up to figure it out right then
I was thinking about hitting the silver parts of the motor w/ some black high-temp paint
& I could hit those @ the same time
that doesn't sound like the best idea, I don't know

Fucking trick questions...

Medic did you already put it back on? Why not remove the bracket now and send it out? Send it to GNT and have it done when mine is.

vt954
02-05-2006, 10:43 AM
Ok, so it's almost out. The only thing holding me up is the swingarm pivot bolt. I don't have a 24mm allen key. If I need to I will buy one from the Snap On dealer, but was hoping to get it done today... Any ideas? Did you guys just buy an allen key or did you figure some other way to get it out?

vt954
02-05-2006, 12:03 PM
Nevermind. I got it. Went to the hardware store and got a 16mm bolt (24mm head) and double nutted it. Came right out.:071:

yeah ,yeah Working time has probably only been a little over an hour or so. I hate to grind the chain because it is in great shape. I suppose you can just add a master link after. I'd rather not though...

GNT it's coming your way this week!

1WHEELMAX
02-05-2006, 04:32 PM
grind it on the master link, you don't want 2 of em on it.

vt954
02-05-2006, 09:14 PM
I'll have to look at it closer -- maybe even look at the service manual... I didn't see a master link.

1WHEELMAX
02-05-2006, 09:22 PM
yea its hard to find sometimes you have to look real close, the link will look just a little different on the outside were the metal pins come threw the chain.

they will have little holes in them on the master link.
