: What mods work, what dont
Truck 05-09-2004, 08:20 PM What mods work on the 54 and what dont? Done the can, thinking about dynojet, and airfilter. Some have said that k&n hurts more than it helps. Gimmie some feedback.
What Can works best, got Jardeen thinking of micron.
Da1000RRStuna 05-10-2004, 07:03 AM stock air filter is better.unless your bike is running like shit then get a power commander..if not leave it alone..
get some brake lines and pads thats a good mod to do also a set of tires maybe supercorsas or rennsports in a medium compound and a damper..
Truck 05-10-2004, 05:39 PM Well ive already got galfer brake lines and pads. Jardeen can, scotts damper. Just wondering if a power commander.
adrenalinjunkee 05-11-2004, 07:34 PM Stay away from the DynoJet Power Commander! I had a serious problem with mine. I used to be able to hit 180s all the time. I installed the Commander... eventually, I was only able to hit 143mph! I disconnected the Commander, 170's. no problem!
I spoke to a few tuners and they had similar incidents. They had boxes of Power Commanders that were bad!
As far as the remaining couple of MPH... I had to change my fuel filter and I got the mph back.
Just my 2 cents...
Truck 05-11-2004, 07:44 PM Cool, Im always open to suggestions. Ive probably made most of the mods im gonna do.Thanks
SKRWZ 05-12-2004, 10:32 AM you might want to put a OHLINS or a penske rear shock on and rework your forks
Truck 05-12-2004, 03:53 PM What do you think I out to do to the forks 8)
SKRWZ 05-12-2004, 07:28 PM What do you think I out to do to the forks 8)
i cant tell you what yo do cause i don't know your budget or that but heres what i did...
Over the winter i got a OHLINS rear shock off e bay and got some new front springs (race-tech) to match up my weight with the bike so while the forks were apart i said fuck it and got a Ohlins re-valve kit put in it as well, let me tell you,, damn this thing feels way different.... very solid the guy who did my work works for Honda Canada racing i tell you he knows his shit.
i remember hearing stunna talk about his suspension on his 954 and wondering what it would be like after all this theres no need for me to get a new bike i got all the power and handling i can ever want or need on my 954
Truck 05-12-2004, 08:04 PM Yea ive been out working on my 3rd gear wheelies and Im pretty satisfied with the power. The other day I was doing 148 in fourth.
The suspension is pretty good as is but I think with a little work it will be a lot better. Thankls for the input.
Stunna what did you say that you did with youre forks. 8)
gntbldr 05-13-2004, 12:48 AM heya truck.. I think you are one the marine type of riders and work with adapt and overcome.
I've lived riding less than what is close to perfect bikes and did what I could with what I had to the most part and that goes for suspension.
Yes one Can do some same like crazy shit with the stock suspension and be as good as to be expected. Then comes in the trust factor within that real time moment of edged lifed bliss and when you have that confident feel of utmost perfection in railment (really feeling the turn with as much force as frictionaly possible) and you know you understand every square centimeter of the ground you are riding on because your suspension is sweetly telling you all this more intricately with a fine tuned suspension to your riding style.
Now imagine al that shwa of sensitivity or feedback magnified softly about 50 times more with even finer tuning and useabilty without the extra effort to work with what you are dealing with as in amount of static friction (traction) , and use of power.
fast riders as you know are fast because they go as fast and as smooth as they can All that they can.\
man... All I'm trying to say is you can make the bike go as fast and as powerfull as you might. Yet feedback and smoothness let you have two of the three most important things it is that are needed to ride all that is frictionaly possible at the highest velocities.
Suspension is the transfer agent in the comunication process of the ground to your balls and if you have a half way decent translator you can do better than get by But if you have an Excellent translator you can go to the farthest edge of physical possiblites with the least probablities of sporatic and incoherent information that you life carrying tires are providing you with.
Thats a lot of detailed info on just a few time decreasing tips that the pros use and they get that good because of undersatnding the feedback and possibilities of their rides edge-lifed performance and control.
NOW if you need more power then that's because you have mastered the useability of what your ride can offer with your riding style.
yadda yadda yadda...
My advice is yeah... my rhetorical pc with custom map advice Only because I Know what it is like living between caution 15-25mph signs at 7 grand entering in the turn in third gear. On not so perfect cracked chunky rippled gravel infested roads that have you learn to have Perfect throttle control and suspension compliancy to maximize performance and the highest potential the bike is capable of.
But If I still had the 54 I would Damn right just get the suspension doen up so I could really use all the performance that that Sweeetly tuned and useable machine was capable of.
no shit... two wheeled slides were not too uncommon. and having the rear sliding out untill the center of the apex and then hooking up and Launching you forward to have to compress and limit your suspension (feedback) right there again for the next flick to a rail... Not to mention most of all this is on mass changing topigraphical terrain that had many many turns at the crest of the hills...
Wheelieing turns oh yeah oh yeah!
All that was acheivable with the stock suspension and all but could have been mastered with the right tools of control with the least amount of input possible.
If you want a step by step then it's the full pipe, with pc and custom map followed by custom suspension and if you are That attached to your 954 then build up the motor with some cams and porting and Very slight milling of the heads to help out with the new higher compression pistons in increasing overall compression that when ran with race gas and some timing advancement you will have your bike of your dreams and it will handle capably with all the power that can be squeezed out of it without running nitrous or turbo...
holy toot did I just go on a babble!  :P
Just got back from the "Cold" concert in milwaukee and I'm half in the sack LOL  http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/friday.gif
Truck 05-13-2004, 04:40 PM Well right now im just getting to know this bike and what it will do. The few people that I was riding with that were on liter bikes were telling me that they just didnt handle as good as a 600. Well Im off of an old 600 and I can tell you that it handles so much better that its scary. Where I was dragging the knee before now im not even comming close at the same speed. Im kinda working it in slowly cause after all with my femhur still healing I have a constant reminder telling me to not wreck this season. I dont know what im gonna do cause basicially if I keep it then I might upgrade the parts if im not gonna keep it then I dont want to spend the money.
I am getting more confident with the bike though, Im already going faster where I normally ride on this bike than on the last and am finding out that I can really go much faster, but Im gonna build on that one slowly cause with my leg the way it is I cant be as smooth as I would like. My leg is finally showing some sighns of healing so well see as the season goes on.
Thanks for all youre input gnt :!:
gntbldr 05-13-2004, 05:21 PM you are right on with you and your ride. Awesome to hear the honesty :D
Anonymous 05-13-2004, 06:06 PM tint your windscreen and put a huge spoiler on the rear and stupd fucking stickers all over it, then get a bad haircut and a mexican/oriental/white trash gurlfriend and watch torque constantly and biker boys and listen to nu metal, nu metal makes everything faster, chrome too, chrome helps alot
Truck 05-13-2004, 07:34 PM Well the tinted windscreen is taken care of, the bad hair cut, and Ive seen biker boyz about twice so three out of seven isnt bad.
Maybee I need to bling bling it like youres pip, bet you even have fuzzy dice too, and those trucker chrome girl stickers. :D

Truck 05-14-2004, 07:02 PM Well forget the bling bling that crap is too dirty for that :!: Damn man get a pail and water and wash that nasty thing
