: Jackets: Leather vs. Textile - Summer fun
boostdemon 04-11-2006, 09:23 AM Well as it warms up here, and since im in need of a new jacket this year, What are some of your thoughts about what to wear in the summer? In this area no jacket is not an option for safety reasons. Some people have told me that textile jackets will melt into your skin if you slide:eek: im thinking thats bs but i really dont know. I've also read that the difference is after you go down (if) leathers you can reuse, textiles you toss.
Two options i've been mulling over for a few weeks from newenough.com :
Leather Stunt-2 Jacket: on sale right now for $332

Or....
Mesh/textile Stunt-2 Jacket: on sale for $188

cbrjimmy1KRR 04-11-2006, 09:47 AM i'd rather sweat than bleed. if you have a choice, go with the leather.
boostdemon 04-11-2006, 10:12 AM no doubt, but is there really a large difference in their protection? both have the same plastic protection, only the material on the outside.
I'd really hate to lose concentration or become dehydrated on an 85º day in the summer and make a mistake in traffic or something
1WHEELMAX 04-11-2006, 05:51 PM get a leather jacket that is breaths, spelling?? "prefarated"
Brad can beat those prices I'm sure.
Flightmedic954 04-11-2006, 05:56 PM heres what I have

Frustration 04-11-2006, 07:26 PM The difference is huge.
Ballistic Nylon should be called "bullshitlistic". I have seen textile jackets come apart big time. worse still is that they melt when they slide and that gets into your wounds too... Mesh should be called "Mess".
I wouldn't ride anything but leather... I live in Phoenix and perforated leather is just fine.

S-MX Air-Flo Jacket
holy crap thats an expensive jacket... but hella nice, i wish i could afford it. :coolgleamA:
By-Tor 04-12-2006, 09:24 AM My minimum gear on the hottest days is helmet (duh), leather jacket, leather gloves, jeans, leather hiking boots. That's for 30-40 mph around town riding which is not all that often.
90% of my time on the bike is in full race gear and back protector.
I don't care how hot it is, I like knowing that I'm going to bed with all the skin that I woke up with.
Dress for the crash, not the weather.
SnowboardingWolf 04-12-2006, 11:49 AM LEATHER..... I will say it again....LEATHER
I rode in tenn. last summer and when got to the hotel I had heat rash across my chest and legs. Was it worth it, of course, after a cold shower and good nights sleep, I was ready to ride again.
My riding buddy went down at 135 mph in jeans and a wind breaker jacket, the scars he looks at every day in mirror is the reason he rides in a one peice leather suit. I have been down too at much lower speed and that leather saved my a$$, actually that and my back cause that what I slid on after I was on the pavement. I still ride with that jacket, agv sport makes it and has vents but on hot days you will burn up, small price to pay to keep all my skin.
So again get leather. and look around, finding a good price that you can live with is easy.

We may not agree on everything "Frus" but we sure as hell agree on this one. Ballistic Nylon is ok for minor get-off's only. Plus it usually cant be safely used again. I've seen the results of it melting into road rash, and it's only saving grace is price. Put simply it's better than nothing..if you can get the leather with comparable armor I'd do it. Check out some of FirstGears stuff. I just replaced my Blade Jacket with a Z-Pilot and I like it. It has zip open vents that really move air.
Remember dress for the crash not the ride.
boostdemon 04-12-2006, 01:55 PM I have a full foul weather riders suit from FirstGear... got it as a hand-me-down from my dad (bmw rider 11 months a year lol). Its nicely made.
I'll get that alpinestar leather jacket... now i just need to find the right size

I'm the worst customer. I go and try them on for size, then see if they'll meet the internet price.

times 2 on that. i didn't used to be like that till i started on the track and saw just how much more danger there is on the road. i'm a puss when it comes to the street. go leather 100% man. if you ever go down, you'll be happy that you did.
be safe honkey
Truck 04-12-2006, 09:41 PM Well i slid into guardrail at about 80 and shattered my femhur but still had all my skin thanks to the leather.
I might consider textile if i was going to the corner store but for my riding I wear full gear. Kinda safer that way. Anywho chooose your protection carefully.
boostdemon 04-12-2006, 10:03 PM yeah i wouldnt mind the leather if it was a quick trip... its the go sit in traffic for 35 minutes (6 miles) in full gear in 90º weather
i'll just have to put the a/c back in my car for days like that

Dont they let you "split lanes" in Virginia?
boostdemon 04-13-2006, 09:56 AM nope, only in california
cbrjimmy1KRR 04-13-2006, 10:43 AM nope, only in california
legal in Texas now :applause:
Flightmedic954 04-13-2006, 06:50 PM you always hear stories that is they DID have there seat belt on they would have died...
& obviously seat belts save a lot wearing them
but you never hear that about plastic jackets vs. leather
leather is always the way to go
I have been looking @ Spidi as well
http://www.spidi.it/images/products/y87_b.jpg
but I don't think they make them big enough for me
I love my A-star I think I will stick w/ them
well worth whatever you have to pay for it
except the damn front pocket
if yo don't zip it closed you will lose whatever is in there
not maybe you will
I have lost a c-phone & keys
hopefully I have learned to zip it every time
