: Turbo and ByTor Pocono Trackday Friday May 12th
Just a friendly ol' event to get some seat time. Here's the report and some details regarding my bike.
The day turned out to be really beautiful. Someone upstairs was definately looking out for us. Got off to a slow start. I was trying to figure out the bike, get my points down, and obviously dust off the winter rust. On the day total I would say that we did over a hundred miles.
Unfortunately, every session out for the intermediates, someone crashed with the exception of 1 session.
It took me 4 sessions to finally get confident enough to throw the knee down. This was my first time back at this track since my crash here in Sept. By the 5th session I was a little more comfortable and I was able to stay with By-Tor's group. Snowdog was a little off today because he was working with a Brand new R1 with brand new tires. He very seldomly could stay with the pack but I think he still had a good time and that's all that matters. Gabe on the RC51 was pretty cool and he was getting massive drives onto the back straight. I couldn't reel him in because I was always getting on the gas late for fear of spinning the rear.
By-Tor identified a problem that I was having. I wasn't going into turns hard enough. I was doing the novice technique of slow in fast out that they teach at most schools. This is good up until a point but I need to be diving into turns harder. After thinking about this, I know this is the reason why I go through tires so quickly. For the first half of the day I would complain of my tires moving around. After listening to By-Tor my times came down rapidly and we went out for a spirited pace. Our group was definately the fastest group in intermediate. We were passing guys left and right.
ONE NOTE ABOUT OHLINS SUSPENSION:
Ohlins suspension loves the gas. All morning I complained that my biike was squirming mid-corner because fo the tires, when really, it wasn't the tires. My throttle application was uneven and it was upsetting the chassis. Once I got used to the powerband and fed the throttle evenly, bye bye squirming. So yes, Ohlins is VERY sensitive to throttle input. More so than stock suspension. You really gotta know what you're doing otherwise you will go SLOWER. But one noticeable thing is that I could not feel one single bump on this racetrack. So much so until By-Tor reminded me how bumpy the track was. lol There is this real bumpy section of the track and I even got ejected out of the seat going into turn 1 but I could not feel any of the bumps leading up to it. lol
Earplugs:
Definitely a great investment. After By-Tor's pointers I wasn't sure if I could go out and ride the same pace without him being there since he didn't ride the last session. But believe it or not, I was able to concentrate better and run the same pace which I credit in part to the earplugs. I had better depth perception and I could concentrate much better.
All in all it turned out to be a great day and I'm looking forward to my next event in a week or two. I'm still not as fast as I was last Sept but if I start the next trackday the way I ended this last one, I will have a groundbreaking season.
By-Tor better watch his back for the 29th. :D
Gotta give the man credit though. He is a "Natural" rider. Talent is definitely there. I'm thoroughly impressed with him.
Turbie
By-Tor 05-13-2006, 08:59 AM I still can't believe how nice the weather was!!!!!! When we left CT there were flash flood conditions. Once we got to Pocono the clouds parted and blue skies for the rest of the day. Once we got back to CT it was raining again. Pure luck for sure!!!!!!
Sure was nice to get out on the track and stretch my legs a bit. I was not as fast as I wanted to be but I had to show some self restraint. As I've been saying, I can't risk getting hurt right now. I spent my time just having fun and helping my friend Dave and spending a full session following Turbo to see where he could pick up some speed and cut his lap times down. I think both made huge improvements by the end of the day.
Like Turbo said, Mike wasn't in his usual groove since he was on his new R1 that only had 200 miles on it and new factory Dunslop 218's. I'm sure his wreck at the end of last season is still on the edge of his mind.
Gabe as usual was doing just fine. He has no problem making the most of his stock RC51. He was also loving his new Pilot Powers with his 180 rear.
I hve nothing but great things to say about my Ohlins shock. Like Turbo said, it makes most of the bumps at the track disapear. I can't believe what a difference it made. I didn't get any wobbles while exiting a turn under power and leaned over. Since I've lost weight my front forks didn't seem as bad as they were last year. This doesn't mean that I shouldn't get them done though to complete the package.
I have come to the conclusion that it's time to step up to race tires. The Pilot Powers are a great multipurpose tire but I have no problem cooking them within 10 minutes of a 20 minute session then I have to pussy-foot around. If I was going balls to the wall I'm sure I would have been on my ass 10 times. I think my next set of tires is gonna be some Metzler Racetecs.
What a fun day. This was my 4th trackday to date. If you have never done a trackday you better get off your ass and do one. You don't know what you're missing.
Had a great time with Turbo. As always he's a great guy to hang with. He's part of the crew.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. lol
ps: thanks for the kind words Turbo.
By-Tor 05-13-2006, 09:11 AM Turbo, On the ride home yesterday I was thinking about your lines and I thought about one more place you can pick up some speed. You need to almost hit the cone on the right of the track at the corner of Pit In (where we enter the track and the Head Honcho corner worker stands). You have to drive right over the bumps and the cone should almost hit your bike, then you will be better set-up for Turn 1. I have found that if I'm more than 1 foot to the left of that line while passing Pit In it really slows my drive into Turn 1. You were probably about 2 to 3 feet to the left of my line through that section. Try that out your next time there.
Use my line and you won't even have to hit your brakes. You're engine braking will be all you need.
Speed at Pocono East is all about going deep and hot into corners. It's a front tire track. If you try to make up for lost time with the throttle you'll just cook your back tire because so much time is spent leaned over.
That's all I have for now.
Watch our video from last year and You'll see what I mean about that cone at Pit In.

Yeah, you're right about turn 1. The problem is that I get it right sometimes and other times, I don't. I just need more seat time.
On another note, I went down to look at my tires this morning, particularly the front tire. And the wear is nowhere near the edge. As hard as I was trying to throw it into corners, I'm nowhere near the edge. I asked my motor guy a couple of weeks ago just how hard I can throw the bike into the turns and he said: "really fukkin hard". And he's AMA fast. So I guess no matter how much I scare myself, the bike will definately handle it. lol
By-Tor 05-13-2006, 03:13 PM Like I said, the bike can take whatever you can throw at it. It's just a matter of getting your brain to dish it out. Al it's gonna take is more seat time like you said.

My tires came yesterday so I'm debating now if I want to go back to East next Saturday. I'm afraid to drop any money with the way this weather has been. I kind of want to wait until the rainy season has run it's course.
I just cleared it with the wife so I'll be free Saturday. I'm gonna sleep on it tonight to decide whether or not I want to take a chance on next Saturday.
Shadow Video will be there so If I do go, I will get a custom video made most likely.
Luvfender 05-13-2006, 05:40 PM Sounds awesome!! Got video?
I went to louden and Friday morning the weather over New York and CT looked bad, my wife called and said it was pouring. I sat in a classroom from 8 to 10:30 just hoping it wouldn't rain. I ended up doing the Penguin Racing beginner class as I have never been to a track. I found the school to be a great way to learn the flags and some tips on how I'm supposed to ride the track. The instructor had multiple 750cc championships before he retired and he rode a Eddie Lawson zx12 replica with the fattest slick I've ever seen on the back. I asked if there were rules about passing and he just said to pass him before he passed me. The class was small because everyone figured the weather would be crap, so there were 2 students to each control rider. I was finally set free after 4 sessions with a control rider, and I did another 3 sessions, on the last one I started overshooting the corners and riding over my head so I figured my old ass was getting tired, so I bailed on the last session, good thing as it started to rain and two people from my group crashed hard.
The bike is in one piece, as am I and I can't believe the adrenaline rush, man, I'm hooked. The only thing I would do different is bring a 600 :w00ta:
By-Tor 05-13-2006, 06:24 PM Nice Rob!!!!! So did you have fun playing in 'The Bowl' ? Was I right when I told you that track is pretty close to the conditions we see on our sunday rides with all of the transitions, surface changes and weird camberings?
Now for the real question.......................... Did you get your knee down? lol
I can't wait to get back to Loudon.
Sorry bro, no video. I brought my camera but I decided to leave it off the bike. I figured I would force myself to put on a good show and I really wanted to take it easy out there.
Here's a nice pic of Pocono. Red is FUSA, Blue is East

Dam man, never put my knee down.:sillyme: Turn three up to the bowl I could of if I had leaned like a poser, but I was just trying to fly up the hill because the total newbies were stalling up the hill because they couldn't see the other side. at the end of the downhill two turns after the bowl there must have been 3 different types of pavement on the right hander, turn 10 or 11, some of the other students were bitchin, I had a blast. I actually got to hammer the beeyatch without looking for deer and stupid drivers. I do think a smaller bike would be more fun for that place, i need to try the Pocono track next, which do you prefer?
By-Tor 05-13-2006, 09:02 PM Pocono is a fun track. You can see the whole course from any point. There are no blind turns. It's totally flat with no hazards at all. It's pretty safe in my humble opinion.
So yeah, I prefer Loudon. hahahahaha
Loudon is a much more technical track. It gives you a bit of everything. Most guys think Loudon is too dangerous but that's what I love about it. Go too deep into turn 3 and you run head on into a wall. Over shoot or get fucked up by the bump at the bottom of turn 10 and you run head on into a wall. fuck up coming up the hill out of The Bowl and you run head on into the mother of all oak trees. You've got G-forces in The Bowl, hills, transitions, blind apexes, blind turns at the tops of the 2 hills, a blind apex going into turn 1. I could go on and on but these hazards are as close to the ones you see on the streets as you can find on one track. I love that place. I just wish it was 2 hours closer. If it was 2 hours closer I would have no reason to ever place 2 wheels on Pocono East again.
Next time I do a trackday at Loudon you'll have to do it with us and stay at our place in NH which is about 40 minutes from the track. We'll make a weekend of it. All the booze, guns, quads and bonfires you can stand for a weekend. Plus it won't cost you a thing. Sounds pretty tempting huh?
I hope Turbo will make it there with us.
gntbldr 05-13-2006, 09:36 PM I will have to wait till I get home and settled in to read this big ass fucking novel, I tell you...

Booze? Guns? Quads and bonfires???? Are you sure we weren't seperated at birth:urfunny: :urfunny: :urfunny: :urfunny:
Sounds like a blast, I am so ready.
I liked the blind turns and hills, I found that most people panicked and slowed down for them. The first thing the teacher mentioned is to know the track in your head, forget about what you see in front of you. I took that advice and I knew I could loft the front coming off the hill after turn 3 into the bowl. Man, I am still riding the permanent grin high from riding.
MetalScorpio 05-15-2006, 06:26 AM So does that mean that Turbo was slow?...it must be cuz i haven't gotten that phone call about him catching a demon or anything like that.
By-Tor 05-15-2006, 06:35 AM hahahahahaha, in all fairness he's getting used to the bike. He was getting faster as the day went on. If he keeps working at his lines and builds up his confidence he'll keep getting faster. He just has to learn to trust the bike a bit more. He'll get there.
MetalScorpio 05-15-2006, 06:51 AM oh, ok then. if you say so
I just signed up for this Saturday with STT. Shadow Video will be there so I'm going to try and get some professional footage. I'm gonna be putting it all on the line this weekend (Read, I'm gonna dive into corners with reckless abandon :D ). I think my brain has digested all the info from last Friday.
Nemisis 05-15-2006, 07:11 AM "he's getting used to the bike" sounds like he was slow. I have a new set up on my bike that I won't be able to test until the track but I will come out and say I will probably be slow.

Oh dear Lord. Get some sliders man!
good luck and remember the lines bro. here is where i remember you lost alot of time..... after you enter the field from back straight (should be in 2nd) before entering the first turn shift into 3rd and carry that speed around all the way to the bus stop.
after the bus stop try to only slow down a bit and follow one speed all the way around the 2 following turns (picture turn by pit entry).
Like by-tor said, you must hit that bump at the pit entrance and no brakes for the next 2 left turn
on the gas and a bit of brakes on that small straight before the right-left into the back straight.
Have fun Botherman. Glad you guys had a great day.

I wasn't slow. I was able to stick with Tor's crew in the afternoon sessions. I predict that this coming saturday I will match my speed from last year and plan to have video to prove it. Now that I've had time to think and reflect, I'm much more confident.

Yup. I'm losing time going onto, and coming off of the back straight. I'm losing about 3 seconds total on the back straight because I'm on the brakes a bit early. Also, I'm losing about 2 seconds in the hairpin because I'm not on the gas as early as I should be when coming out of it. I was running 20s so when I get my act together this Saturday I'll be sure to be back in the 15s.
On another note, it felt good to finally get a FULL trackday under my belt. Also needed the tracktime to get my confidence back after my crash. Amazing what going down does to a person.

You can carry that much speed going into the first turn after the back straight?
You can carry that much speed going into the first turn after the back straight?
Yes. Last season I was knee down on the gas coming off of the back straight. I couldn't do that last friday. I was too scared and my brain wasn't used to the speed. It really took some time to get comfortable.
But By-Tor will tell you, we went out one session and it was blah blah. We pulled off after a red flag and By-Tor gave me a couple of pointers. We went right back out about a minute later and my times dropped tremendously. It's just a matter of seat time.
I'm really looking forward to this Saturday.
By-Tor's exact words were......... "100% improvement". This only happened in a couple moments time.
MetalScorpio 05-15-2006, 07:35 AM You can carry that much speed going into the first turn after the back straight?
you could carry the same speed that you enter from the back straight and even speed up some more after the second left turn before the bus stop
By-Tor 05-15-2006, 07:37 AM You'd be amazed by how much speed you can carry coming off the back straight. You just have to trust your front end. You should be able to drive through that turn and be on the gas hard enough that the front end lifts on the slight hill after the turn.
Scorpio, do you still run stock gearing? I only use 3rd gear on the back straight and 2nd for the rest of the track. I'm running a 15t front sprocket.

stock front 42 rear from 41
what i do is trying to be consistent one speed then trying to speed up exiting and then almost hitting the red line before the bus stop.
Turbo's bike has alot of torque so he should not have any problem pulling fast on exit and he might even run into the red line sooner then we would.

Very true. My bike revs to 11,200 now up from 10,200 and on the back straight one session out, I punched it and banged into the limiter. By-Tor heard heard it. I hit the limiter right before the second Pocono sign when I punch it. I have to shift into third and there is no way around that.
By-Tor 05-15-2006, 07:47 AM By-Tor's exact words were......... "100% improvement". This only happened in a couple moments time.
It's true, those were my exact words. I'm a good coach:neener:
Just wait until I get my forks done and slap on some race tires. I'll really be able to speed things up a bit then. My Pilot Powers were squirming around like a mo-fo. 2 wheel slides were the game of the day.
I was being very conservative on Friday. I had a bunch of speed left in me but I was not out to prove anything. I'm sure I could have been running about 4-5 seconds faster than I was. I was Just having a relaxing day at the track and I didn't even have one OH-SHIT moment all day.

When I was clocking the 20s By-Tor seemed about 1 to 2 seconds faster per lap so my guess was that he was running 17s/18s. About the same as his video from last year.

You NEED them.
By-Tor 05-15-2006, 07:56 AM OK, here it comes. Please don't take this as bashing or shit talking but my stock 1000RR with stock pipe pulls Turbo's bike on the back straight. Every time I followed him on the back straight I couldn't go full throttle or else I would run up his ass. Turbo, I really thought your bike would have pulled harder.
And it wasn't because I was getting a better drive out of the turn because I was following you. Even after you picked up your pace.
You're motor probably shines better coming out of turns like the bus stop where the rpm's are lower but I think mine will still out pull yours in turns like going on the back straight or coming out of the double apex (which really is one continuous turn if you are a fast guy like me, lol).
MetalScorpio 05-15-2006, 07:59 AM maybe is not the motor By-tor but the Nut holding the seat to the handle bars :D

I think that you were full throttle MUCH sooner. I was all scared of my tires and $hit so I wouldn't full throttle it until I was completely upright. Your bike definitely does not pull mine. Trust me. When I pin my throttle my wheel comes up and the front starts wigglin. I was just a lil bitch with the gas.

That sounds about right. I know that with a better set of tires I could be in the 13-14 range all day long without having to push too hard.

At Mid Ohio, I did a roll on with a piped ZX-10 on the back straight and we were neck and neck. He only beat me on the brakes because he was a better rider. I was full throttle and getting the headshake. (I was also running MR1 but I don't think that it mattered "THAT" much)

Scared of your tires? Did you see what my rear looked like by the end of the day? That 180 rear was crying:rofl: . That was my 2nd trackday on those tires and 1500 road miles. I'll probably get another 500 road miles out of my rear. The left side is shot. Too bad because the middle still looks great.

From most of the Pocono veterans that I talk to, once you hit the 17 range, it's really difficult to drop time. It's not as easy as it seems to go faster. You feel like you're going faster but the times don't usually reflect it. Pocono times usually catch you by surprise as they start to go down.
By-Tor 05-15-2006, 08:08 AM I would love to know what the difference in weight is between our bikes fully wet with us in full gear. I bet were pretty close to being the same weight rider + bike.

What can I say??? I'm a mental case. I have no clue how to judge tires. I'm learning but it's a scary subject for me. Especially when I thought I had grip last Sept and still ended up going down.

My guess is that my bike is about 410lbs to 415lbs full of fuel and I'm 201lbs plus about 15lbs with gear for a total of 630lbs max. I'm gonna go with 630lbs.
By-Tor 05-15-2006, 08:09 AM Yeah but I was really holding back all day and I know I could shave about 4 to 5 seconds off with the right tires and not having the fear of fucking up a job prospect looming over my head. lol

lol. Good point. I think a day riding in the advanced group for you and you'd have it down. Consistent 14s definitely.
By-Tor,
I just got this PM from Armando (The guy that crashed with the 748)
Hey Nate,
Great hanging with you and the boys on Friday. Thanks for everything you guys did for me, from the suspension to helping me after the crash. Special thanks to Mike and Dave for loading all my shit up at the end.
By the way, the prognosis was 4 broken ribs. Man does it hurt to cough. As soon as I can I'll take off all the broken stuff and probably get the frame checked at Computrack. Man did I fuck up, I still can't believe I did that. It would have been better to low side in the turn than the way I did it.
Anyway, again thanks to everyone and hope to ride with you guys again soon.
Armando
By-Tor 05-15-2006, 08:21 AM I figured he must have broken a few ribs. I bet he wished he didn't wake up from his nap and slept through that session. He was a cool guy. I really felt bad for him.
Do me a favor and send him my best wishes if you can.

By-Tor 05-15-2006, 08:48 AM Yeah man, those things look like they're made out of old pencil erasers. lol
By-Tor 05-15-2006, 09:07 AM I just watched the video from last year at East from my brother's camera and my lines were MUUUUUUUUUCH better this year. I was losing a bunch of time last year. I'm almost embarrassed by that vid now. lol

I'm not sure if they are up yet though. He said he was going away and would be back today.
By-Tor 05-16-2006, 07:13 AM Sweet, thanks. Yeah, I remember him saying that. I'll start checking tonight. I wonder if he has any pics from our session together. I would love to have one with the 2 of us in it. Might be a few since I was tight on your back wheel. Would be a sweet pic. I would frame it.

The pics are up I just checked. He didn't take any photos that session that we went out together. He does have a couple of me following Gabe around. You've got some good shots too.
He doesn't have any knee down shots of me. But this other guy's daughter took some shots so hopefully she caught a couple.
1WHEELMAX 05-16-2006, 04:49 PM wow all of this and just a month or two ago I really believe turbo thought he would be able to smoke tor on the track, I know a lot of it was shit talking but I think you thought you would be a lot faster, funny sometimes, how things work out.
By-Tor 05-16-2006, 06:42 PM hehehehehe.:naughty1:
:neener:

We already do:neener: We always talk for at least an hour at a time. Turbo is really like a long lost brother. Heck, even my brother Mike has taken a liking to him:rofl:

No, I definitely know what I'm capable of. I just have to prove it to you guys. A little bit more time and I should have my act together. I can't make adjustments as quickly as some of you guys, but when I get it together you will know. Just ask Tor what a difference pulling off of the track and going back onto the track did one session.
I'm like a switch that you have to turn on. When I'm off...... boy am I off. When I'm good.......oh yeah, it's good.
You gotta understand that I'm still adjusting. Missing shifts on straight aways for crying out loud having brain farts and so on. I'm really a mess.
All that said, I'm feeling really good now and Tor will tell you that my speed started to come back towards the end of the last trackday. By-Tor knows that I'm much faster now than last year. He saw a glimpse of it but he didn't get the full effect yet.
By-Tor 05-16-2006, 07:44 PM When you have the full effect going on give me a call and I'll be there........
But really guys, Turbo and I were not there to race each other. And yes he did get faster during the session that I gave him pointers. I am his Mr Miagi.
I really do want to see Turbo get faster. I want to see him do that bike some justice:thumbsup:

Sept 29th is still the showdown! :D
There's no way I could even dream of racing last Friday. I would hurt myself really badly. lol It took me four sessions just to get my knee down again. If that doesn't spell disaster to you guys, then I don't know what does. It's unreasonable for anybody to expect me to be fast right out of the box this season.
By-Tor 05-16-2006, 07:57 PM Too bad you don't have a street bike bro. I really want you to come see how we do it all the time. I'm not kidding when I say that the street is our track away from the track.
Now I have to go put my sparky pucks back on for the weekend:naughty1:
