a group of Honda reps straight from Japan came into the shop today to talk to the boss. they didn't talk numbers...they talked bikes. what people wanted, what sold well, etc. a bunch of them were R&D guys.
i asked my boss to ask if they had plans of bringing the RC211V's V5 mill to the street. after the meeting he said that it was a definite possibility.
Honda would DOMINATE the open-class sportbike market with that motor. looks like it might happen!

If so - well the 1000rr is going on the trading block - I love'er, but she'd have to go.........
Pipe dream. Give it up.
It would be extremely expensive to produce in great quantity. They would have to go the Ducati route and make it a limited edition.

maybe i explained it wrong. i'm not talking about an RC211V replica. i'm talking about an open-class sportbike featuring an RC211V-derived engine of V5 configuration.

That would be sweet, but is it practical for mass production? How much would one of those things cost?

Even still, it's too expensive to produce that motor. They'll never do it. V4s are extremely expensive. Imagine a V5.

even if they did make it a limited edition, it'd still sell.
as it is right now they can't sell it or mass produce it, because it's still being used in MotoGP. but as soon as they take the cc's down to 800....they will be able to release it to the public.
do you actually think they'll let a powerplant like that and all the R&D that went into it go to waste?? you'd be crazy to think so.
if they build it............it will sell.....no matter the cost.
it'd no doubt be a tuned down version, but it'd still rip!!

Not as expensive as you might think Turbo. Rumor has it that Honda might produce a stroked V5 for the Blackbird. CBR 1200 XX. That would make a long awaited Ninja/Hayabusa killer for sure.

haha maybe a ducati V4 is super expensive to produce. but then again, so is everything ducati makes!
you're right about the increased cost. you have four cams instead of two, two tensioners instead of one, and two heads. BUT...
a 90* V-configuration eliminates the need for a balance shaft because the setup creates perfect primary balance.
it would be only slightly more expensive than a V4. look at Honda's VFR800I Interceptor. that's not an expensive bike. all you're doing is adding one piston, one connecting rod, adding a journal on the crank, widening the case/front head, and lengthening the front camshafts. going from a single bank of cyls to two banks (inline to a V configuration) is what creates the most expense. Honda's ceptor, as well as the earlier V4's (of which I have two) proved that it can be done cheaply. adding another cylinder is childs play :-)

Actually, the reason that motor is so expensive is because it is NOT mass produced. If Honda wants to set up the assembly line and mass produce it, you will be surprised at how low the cost will be. Making it special edition will only make the cost sky high.
No doubt the public will snatch 'em all up. It's about time Honda does something cutting edge. that would ROCK!!!!!!!!!!

Hell yea, I think I am holding on to my 04 until something like this!
But then, the 1000RR and the 954RR will be gone ;)

imo there needs to be a triumphant step made by honda to signify their superiority towards making another landmark such as when trhey made the 900rr series and many of their unique well liked models they stunned the motorcycle industry with.
the 1krr step was a Grand step but in all due reality that movement was just a follow of suit.
i want an Original Honda and the V-5 would be just that.
