: Moving Down the Clip-on’s on a 954
Turnerscasa Dallas 06-13-2007, 09:04 AM I’ve have been reading “Twist of the Wrist II” during my lunch breaks at work. In the Riders Position chapter, it mentions you can benefit from positioning your clip-on’s lower on the forks, to gain a better riding posture and overall better balance distribution. I had also discussed this with a riding buddy, and he thought I could also benefit from this type of adjustment. So last night after feeling pretty good about it, and hearing it in two different places, I adjusted them down about an inch lower from the top triple clamp.
My wife has a 2005 600RR and I really like the ergo’s on that bike. If you look at the way the clip-on’s are mounted on it, they seem about level with the top triple clamp. The 954 has them hanging I’d say about an inch and a half above.
So taking this into account, I took the plunge and made the adjustment; test drove it last night, and rode it to work this morning. On my bike, it made a hell of a difference. When you’re sitting on it the riding position doesn’t seem to be that different. But, when you’re riding it its night and day better.
I thought surely if this was an adjustment that could help me carry more speed all around, someone here would be able to comment on it, good, bad or ugly. Anyone here running or have run, their 954 clip-on’s lower with good/bad results? Like to here some comments on this topic.
G23954RR 06-14-2007, 12:44 PM For shits and giggles i did this last night. I moved them down about 3/4" and angled them out. Feels more comforable but weather was crap last night and looked crappy today so no riding yet. I have tried to research repositioning them and any advice or guidelines but havent found much of anything. I know a few of the local guys that do track days tend to have straight looking clipons but havent had a chance to talk to them since your post to see what they say.
Streetfighter 06-14-2007, 02:08 PM Is this really easy to do? I always thought the bikes clip ons were already comfortable. If it makes more so than I will have to try that out.
Turnerscasa Dallas 06-14-2007, 04:53 PM I thought some of the guys that were here through the hay day of the 954 could let us know if this was good advice or not? Truck, gntblr?? Whats up, what do you think about this?
PS: My bikes setup is aimed at roadracing.
gntbldr 06-15-2007, 02:22 AM best I can say is if it feels good go with it.
test it out slowly and with at least a 30% reserve in case of any negative reactions and let us know what you all come up with
Turnerscasa Dallas 06-15-2007, 03:52 AM Thank you! I took it really easy trying to gain some confidence in the front end. I think I have a tad to much rebound. Going to back some out before I ride again. The 54 has never felt so balanced, at least since its been at my house. That could have been rear shock setup in my mind. Been running a known setup, I'm not sure for what weight rider, but it should have been close to pretty good.
gntbldr 06-15-2007, 10:54 AM coolness. when would you be able to test it out at the track?
Turnerscasa Dallas 06-15-2007, 11:47 AM Trying,, I need Leathers and I'm set. Choppin at the bit watching all your greatness!
gntbldr 06-16-2007, 01:52 AM lol... thnx...
what's your height and your weight?
Turnerscasa Dallas 06-16-2007, 06:01 AM 5'11, probably 200 lb's,, before a sixpack and a steak>>
Turnerscasa Dallas 06-16-2007, 06:08 AM I'm not advocating this change on anyone’s bike. That wasn’t the purpose of my post. I made a personal decision to make the change. Simply wondering if anyone here had done it, and had comments on the effects it had on their bike.
I'm not selling it to anyone, just trying to find my personal Zen.
gntbldr 06-16-2007, 10:28 AM well, within your quest for your personal zen if you come across a trackday you can do but are limited by not having leathers let me know and I might be able to lend you some. ;)
Turnerscasa Dallas 06-16-2007, 01:37 PM Thanks gntbldr! Thats a very cool thing to offer up.. I'm looking at leathers, when I see the set I want, I'll pull the trigger.

cbrjimmy1KRR 06-17-2007, 10:20 AM check out MotoLiberty. Those guys are just down the road from you. I went out that way 2 weeks ago and tried on several suits.......let me tell you, that was a work out. they don't make suits that'll fit a 6'3" 230lb fella right off the rack. I ended up getting the Fieldsheer flex suit.https://www.motoliberty.com/images/Prod_Images/5c_2.jpg
they are super cool and patient.

Turnerscasa Dallas 06-17-2007, 11:01 AM The Fieldsheer leathers look exactly like Tecknic to me. I'm not sure what I'm going to do there yet.
What all do you run here in Texas.
gntbldr 06-17-2007, 11:35 PM i wish i still had my hands.
:ohshit::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
SINJIN 06-21-2007, 05:03 AM Lowered my vortex clipons about 1/2 inch about a month ago and it did make a difference in the way it rode. It helped me get into a better riding position and I could feel the front end a little better but I also raised the rear about 8-10 mm so that could have made a difference also. I like it but it really depends on the rider. A couple of racers that I ride with have done this with their bikes ( not 954's ) and some have liked it and some have hated it.
