Now in its second year, our MOBO awards selections process gives us the chance to reflect on the year that was. And for 2010, the spotlights were generally shining on European manufacturers which continued to pump out desirable product while most Japanese OEMs crawled into a hole to wait out the near-global recession.

The performance of modern literbikes may be intoxicatingly fabulous, but we were becoming a little bored in recent shootouts by having to resort to splitting hairs among the Big Four's similarly spec'd 1000cc sportbikes. Yamaha gave us a taste of something different last year with the crossplane-crankshaft version of the R1, but it has a small power number and a large weight number, so it wasn't the game-changer we hoped would shake up the literbike pecking order. Whether it's simply coincidence, a barometer of the still-weak world economy or a sign of changing OEM methodologies, we're not exactly sure, but that no significant updates made their way into the crop of Japanese literbikes for 2010 is a matter of fact.
The past year saw two all-new models (the R1 and GSX-R1000) continue the typical two-year development cycle from Japan.
